In his commentary on this important mindfulness teaching by the great nineteenth-century rimé (non-sectarian) master, Jamgön Kongtrül Lodrö Thaye, Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche explains that guru devotion, or “calling to the guru” is a technique to attack our habit of self-cherishing. The text can be depressing as it clearly details all our negative habits, yet the most profound teachings are those that disturb rather than inspire us. We repeatedly call on the guru to recognize us because we do not see that the guru is always with us. We ask for the blessings of the guru to cut through our pride, ego-clinging and dualistic vision. Through supplicating the guru, our intellectual understanding of the dharma can develop into the confidence that ultimately the guru is none other than buddhanature: the fundamental nature of our mind.     In this talk to university students, Rinpoche dispels the myth that mind training is some sort of buddhist ritual involving a zafu. The real goal of mind training is to see the truth. If we can see the truth — not just intellectually or academically, but habitually and emotionally — the way we look at life will change. And what truth is that? Nothing exotic: the truth of impermanence (anicca), unsatisfactoriness (dukkha) and selflessness (anatta). Currently, our lopsided view makes us anxious, depressed, proud, insecure and full of prejudice.
