Stranded in the Outback: Stuck Fast in Mud

Brendan Cook, his partner Mel and two of their friends take a trip along the legendary Birdsville Track - one of Australia’s most notorious outback roads. But an unusual series of events results in their vehicle getting stuck in silt and mud, sinking further with every attempt to extract it. As the sun beats down, Brendan and his companions must free their car before their dwindling food and water supplies run out entirely. But as the hours and days pass without success, their only remaining options appear drastic and dangerous… A Noiser podcast production. Hosted by John Hopkins. Salvador Dalí

With his expressive face and gravity-defying moustache, Salvador Dalí is one of the most recognisable – and influential – artists of the 20th century. Famed for his paintings of melting clocks and his lobster telephone, Dalí also cultivated a larger-than-life character for himself to play, using fashion and performance to blur the boundaries between art and reality. But alongside the deliberately provocative persona lurked a fascination with fascism and a sometimes-violent temper.   So what can we be sure of about the life of an artist who loved to self-mythologise? And how did he become the best known of the surrealists, creating images that far outlasted his own lifetime? This is a Short History Of Salvador Dalí. A Noiser podcast production. Hosted by John Hopkins. With thanks to Dr Elliott H King, a professor of art history at Washington and Lee University in Virginia, who has studied the life of Salvador Dalí for more than two decades. Was Henry VIII England's Most Evil King?

This is the turbulent reign of that infamous Tudor monarch, Henry VIII. His spectacularly complicated love life, break with Rome, political executions and ruthless pursuit of power. Today we examine his rule and the many unfortunate people who crossed his path, and ask whether his actions make him England’s most evil monarch. To investigate whether Henry VIII truly deserves the title, we're joined by Kate Williams, author of 'Regina: A New History of Women and Power'. Produced by James Hickmann and Mariana Des Forges, and edited by Dougal Patmore. We need your help! Brazil's War of the Triple Alliance: Paraguayan Women Warriors

When Paraguay faced annihilation in the War of the Triple Alliance (1864–1870), its women became the backbone of resistance. While men died by the tens of thousands, women farmed, smuggled weapons, served as spies, and even fought in battle. This episode focuses on the ‘residentas’ and ‘destinadas’ — women forcibly relocated to supply lines — and the legendary female soldiers at the Battle of Acosta Ñu, where children and women faced Brazilian cavalry. We explore how Elisa Lynch, Francisco Solano López’s Irish partner, organized medical care and propaganda, and how post-war Paraguay’s skewed gender ratio reshaped society. Using accounts from British diplomats and Paraguayan archives, we reveal a seldom-told story of survival and sacrifice. #Paraguay #WarOfTheTripleAlliance #FranciscoSolanoLopez #ElisaLynch #AcostaNu #Residentas #Destinadas #ParaguayanWomen #FemaleSoldiers #SouthAmericanHistory #19thCenturyWarfare #LopezDictatorship #ParaguayPopulationLoss #GenderHistory #History #FexingoHistory #Brazil #Argentina Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo

New Archeological Tech Is Rewriting Everything We Know About the Ancient Past

Humanity’s story from 10,000 BC to 3,000 BC (from the end of the ice age to the beginning of civilizations) follows this pattern: primitive hunter-gatherers slowly progressed to farmers, then to village-builders, then to city-dwellers and kings. With enough food surplus to free up everyone from having to farm, religion, medicine, and art developed. But a revolution in archaeological science has completely rewritten the human past. Tools like ancient DNA sequencing, isotope analysis, LiDAR scanning, ground-penetrating radar, and high-precision radiocarbon dating are completely rewriting what we know about the ancient past. For example, the Natufians of the Levant, living between roughly 14,500 and 11,500 years ago, built permanent stone villages, stored food, buried their dead with elaborate grave goods, and developed complex social hierarchies — all before farming a single crop. We’re going to look at other recent discoveries that have changed what we know about the Ice Age and Neolithic periods, and we’re joined by is Patrick Wyman, author of Lost Worlds: How Humans Tried, Failed, Succeeded, and Built Our World.  We cover the Copper Age megacity beneath modern Spain that was abandoned so completely it wasn’t rediscovered until the 1990s. We talk about Ukraine’s Trypillia culture, which built cities of tens of thousands of people,  with no kings, no temples, and no walls. We look at the Neolithic mass graves of central Europe that shattered the myth of the peaceful early farmer, a single Polish burial site where DNA, isotopes, and radiocarbon dating together revealed a family massacre tied to the very moment steppe migrants were pushing into the region. All of this leads to mysteries of the ancient world that still haven’t been answered. Why were the Great Pyramid and Stonehenge only built once? Why does half the world speak languages descended from a single prehistoric tongue that left no writing and no monuments? Why does collapse keep winning, and what does that tell us about our own moment? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

  • Interview: On the Army of Ptolemaic Egypt w/ Dr. Paul Johstono

Interview: On the Army of Ptolemaic Egypt w/ Dr. Paul Johstono

Though the longest-lived and most wealthy of the Hellenistic "Big 3", the Ptolemaic rulers in Egypt have never really held the distinction as a major military player in the violent struggles of the Hellenistic period, instead often seen as decadent and lazy as per the writings of those like Polybius. Dr. Paul Johstono joins us to discuss his new book “The Army of Ptolemaic Egypt, 323-204 BC: An Institutional and Operational History”, which seeks to challenge this claim and reassert the role of the Ptolemaic kingdom as a significant military force in the Mediterranean, capable of meeting the demands of maintaining a large land and sea empire amidst powerful rivals and often inhospitable environments.
