Self-Care Isn’t Selfish: Protect Your Peace

In this episode of Life Warriors, Teresa and Mary have an honest and relatable conversation about the true meaning of self-care. They explore why so many of us feel guilty about putting ourselves first and remind listeners that self-care is not always a spa day or expensive getaway. Sometimes it means taking a walk, sitting quietly with a cup of coffee, reading a book, getting enough sleep, putting down your phone, saying no, setting boundaries, or simply allowing yourself to rest. They discuss the importance of emotional, mental, physical, and social self-care—and how recognizing your own needs can help you protect your peace and avoid running yourself completely empty. Teresa and Mary also share personal experiences with grief, stress, trauma, overwhelm, and the struggle to give themselves grace. Their message is simple: self-care is not one-size-fits-all, and what restores one person may look completely different for someone else. Whether it is spending time with people who make you laugh, walking your dogs, gardening, learning something new, journaling, or simply taking a moment to breathe, you deserve to take care of yourself without guilt. Their challenge to every Life Warrior is to do one thing for yourself this week—without feeling guilty—and remember that you deserve peace, so protect it when you find it.

Dr. Jay Barnett on Men’s Mental Health, Suicide & Healing Trauma | NXT Chapter with T.D. Jakes

In one of the most emotional and vulnerable conversations of NXT Chapter, Dr. Jay Barnett joins T.D. Jakes for a powerful discussion about men’s mental health, childhood trauma, suicide, emotional healing, and what it truly means to break generational cycles.Dr. Barnett opens up about surviving two suicide attempts, battling anger and rejection, growing up with physical abuse, and carrying the emotional weight of father wounds for years. From nearly taking his stepfather’s life as a teenager to later becoming a therapist helping men heal across the country, his story is a profound testimony of transformation, purpose, and resilience.Together, T.D. Jakes and Dr. Barnett unpack why so many men suffer in silence, why emotional language is often missing in men, and how unresolved trauma can shape identity, relationships, marriage, fatherhood, and self-worth. They discuss masculinity, rage, depression, imposter syndrome, loneliness, therapy, emotional suppression, and the silent battles many men fight behind closed doors.Throughout the conversation, they dive into why anger is often the only emotion many men feel safe expressing, how trauma and rejection can shape performance and identity, and the lasting impact childhood wounds can have on adult relationships and emotional intimacy. They also explore the growing loneliness epidemic among men, the importance of healing through therapy, faith, community, and honesty, and what it means to move beyond survival mode into a life where you can finally celebrate yourself. John Maxwell's #9 Law of Leadership: The Law of Magentism

📥 CLICK HERE to Download the free Leadership Workbook and submit your question for our Q&A with John and me.   If you're not happy with the people around you, the most important question you can ask is not "why do I keep attracting this?" It's "what about me is drawing it in?" Law #9 of John Maxwell's 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership is the Law of Magnetism, and it is one of the most confronting laws in this entire series. The principle is simple: who you are is who you attract. Leaders don't attract who they want. They attract who they are. Your values, your energy, your standards, your character — all of it creates a magnet that pulls toward you the people who reflect it back. John opens this episode with an exercise that will stop you cold. He asks you to write down the three qualities you most want in the people around you. And then he asks the only question that matters: do you actually possess those qualities yourself? I connect this law to something I've written about in both Max Out Your Life and The Power of One More: your internal thermostat. Most people are running their teams, their businesses, and their lives at whatever temperature they believe they deserve. And when results start to exceed that setting, they subconsciously cool things back down. This law is about raising that thermostat because when you raise your own standard, the quality of people who stay in your world begins to change too. Here's what you'll gain from this episode: The Mirror Exercise: John's opening exercise that forces you to look honestly at what you're actually bringing before you make another hire or point the finger at your team. The Six Areas of Magnetism: The specific dimensions where like attracts like, and how to use each one to understand exactly what your leadership is currently pulling in. Your Life Is Recruiting: Why your leadership is drawing something toward you right now whether you realize it or not, and the one question that changes everything. The Identity Thermostat: My framework for understanding why most leaders keep attracting the same people at the same level, and what it takes to permanently raise the standard. High Standard Attracts High Standard: The practical rep this week: evaluate your team, your inner circle, and your culture at home, and ask honestly what your leadership has been modeling. This is one of those laws that stays with you long after the episode ends. The people you are surrounded by right now are telling you something. The question is whether you're willing to hear it. Go watch this episode and then do the exercise John walks you through. I promise it will reveal something worth knowing. This series releases every Thursday and each law builds on the last. 30 Years of Marriage: 3 Things About Relationships I Wish Someone Told Me Sooner

Today is Mel’s 30th wedding anniversary. And she couldn't think of a better way to celebrate than to have a sit down conversation with her husband Chris about the lessons they've learned along the way. This episode isn’t about the highlights – it’s talking about the hard lessons that have shaped their marriage these last 30 years. Mel and Chris unpack the years where they felt more like roommates than a married couple and they share stories from when stress got the best of them.  They get into how resentment and bitterness created a distance that kept growing, and how they found their way back to each other. They talk about what they wish they knew sooner and the expert advice that has helped them the most. Mel and Chris also break down their relationship truths into small, actionable things you can do to make your relationship stronger today.  In this episode, you’ll learn: -How to tell when stress has turned your partner from your favorite person into the person you blame. -Why resentment, criticism, silence, and shutdown can become a cycle that quietly pulls couples apart. -What “normal marital hatred” means and why your partner can trigger old wounds you have never fully dealt with. -How to soften during conflict instead of hardening, attacking, or retreating. -The simple rituals Mel and Chris use to rebuild connection, including notes, touch, walks, shared meals, and weekly calendar check-ins. -How to know whether your relationship has the foundation to grow with you through decades of change. Whether you are newly in love, decades into a marriage, going through a rough patch, or wondering if your relationship is going to make it through a rough season, this conversation will give you a more honest and useful way to think about lasting love.  Because the truth is, a strong relationship isn't built by avoiding the hard seasons. It’s built by learning the lessons from them and finding your way back to each other when those seasons come.  For more resources related to today’s episode, click here for the podcast episode page.  If you liked the episode, you should check out these ones next, both of which were mentioned on the podcast: James Sexton: The Most Eye-Opening Conversation on Marriage & Love You Will Ever Hear (From #1 Divorce Lawyer) Terry Real: Married, Dating, or Single: The Best Relationship Advice You Will Ever Receive Mel also wants to tell you:   Try the 23g protein shot I drink every single morning Join 2 million readers loving my weekly newsletter - full of tips, tools, and inspiration The Let Them Theory: read the book everyone’s talking about Watch the episodes on YouTube Connect with me on Instagram Follow the show’s Instagram for clips, behind the scenes, and more Find some daily positivity on my TikTok Want zero ads? T.D. Jakes on Figuring It Out When You Don’t Know the Way | NXT Chapter with T.D. Jakes

In this powerful episode of NXT Chapter, T.D. Jakes reflects on the courage it takes to build a life, a vision, and a legacy without having every answer in advance. Centered on the idea of “figuring it out,” Bishop Jakes shares why the experience of building something for yourself is often more valuable than the thing you are trying to build. Drawing from George Washington Carver’s words, his own journey in ministry, and the hard lessons of public mistakes, delays, setbacks, and transitions, Jakes encourages listeners not to be defeated by criticism, uncertainty, or the fear of starting over. He reminds us that success is rarely handed over fully formed — it is slow-cooked through patience, persistence, faith, and the willingness to keep going even when the road is unclear. This episode is for anyone standing at the edge of what’s next, unsure of the path but determined to move forward anyway. As Bishop Jakes says, “If you did it once, you can definitely, definitely, definitely do it again.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
