Why Spain Stands Up to Trump

What’s the best way to navigate the Trump White House? Some countries employ flattery; others look to keep a low profile. Spain is a rare country that openly disagrees with several U.S. positions. On issue after issue, from the war in Iran to immigration policy, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s left-wing government has publicly forged a path that runs counter to a global trend of right-wing policies. But is such a path electorally viable? We’ll find out when Spaniards head to the polls in November. On the latest episode of FP Live, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares explains how Madrid thinks about the trade-offs in following its progressive agenda while risking the ire of the world’s biggest economy. Plus, Ravi shares his read on how conflicts around the world, from Ukraine to Iran, are increasingly linked. Gridlock in the U.S. Housing Market

The housing market in the United States is in gridlock these days, largely because of high interest rates. Adam and Cameron discuss the broader implications for the U.S. economy. Also on the show: Brazil’s presidential election Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Can America Stay Ahead of China on AI?

It is well known that at least part of Washington’s reluctance to regulate artificial intelligence comes from wanting to make sure the United States stays ahead of China. But what exactly are the two countries racing for? Matt Sheehan, a co-director of the China AI Initiative at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, joins FP’s Ravi Agrawal to explain the countries’ very different definitions of winning and why U.S. models are only months ahead of their Chinese competitors. Plus, after Brazil’s first round of elections, Ravi shares his read on Latin America’s rightward swing. Francis Fukuyama

Adam and Cameron discuss the newly released memoir of Francis Fukuyama, the American political scientist whose influential paper in 1989—which was later expanded into a book—posited that liberal democracy had won the world's ideological battle. The thesis was heralded as prescient when the Berlin wall fell a short time later but has been subjected to much criticism over the years. In the memoir, In the Realm of the Last Man, Fukuyama sets out to account for events that have transpired since 1989. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Could AI Destroy the World?

Artificial intelligence continues to advance at a remarkable pace, raising big questions about the future of humanity. Leading figures warn that increasingly powerful AI systems could one day escape our control, but peers argue that line of thinking is just speculative fearmongering. Welcome to Counterpoint, where we look at one big question facing world leaders from opposing points of view. In this episode, we’re asking: Could AI destroy the world? Arguing in favor is Stuart Russell, who has been referred to as the “godfather of AI” and whose foundational textbook, Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach, is used in universities around the world. He’s currently a professor of computer science at the University of California, Berkeley. And arguing against is Jürgen Schmidhuber, who has been referred to as the “father of modern AI” for his breakthroughs in the technology. He is currently a co-chair of the Center of Excellence for Generative AI at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia. Counterpoint is a production of Foreign Policy, in partnership with the Doha Forum. The show is hosted by FP deputy editor Nick Danforth. Learn more about your ad choices. ProHuman Institutions

Right now, we’re all living through a grand experiment. The rise of artificial intelligence promises to profoundly impact humanity. While conversations about AI are often focused on technical issues, this transformative technology will shape all aspects of society. The question facing world leaders has been asked before: How do we govern a technology powerful enough to threaten civilization itself? In this episode, Beatrice Fihn, the director of Lex International and a senior fellow at the U.N.’s Institute for Disarmament Research, explains why nuclear technology can be a useful analogy for artificial intelligence. Then, our featured host, former Irish President Mary Robinson, speaks with global governance expert Julia Morse about the landscape of international institutions that address global AI governance and what new ways of thinking may be on the horizon. ProHuman: Governing the Global AI Revolution is a co-production of Foreign Policy and the Future of Life Institute. Mary Robinson and all of our featured hosts are members of The Elders. Julia Morse founded the Politics of AI Governance Lab at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Beatrice Fihn was the executive director of ICAN, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, when the organization was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017.
