Thunder Jackson

Kyle Bradley was raised in Piedmont, Oklahoma. But his alter-ego, Thunder Jackson, was born in Los Angeles, California, after years of playing in smoky bars and busking since he was a teenager. He released his debut self-titled album in 2020, but after its release he said that music wasn't making sense to him anymore. It wasn't until he moved back to Oklahoma where he found the inspiration to create again. He released an EP titled Take Me Back last fall and is working on new music while splitting his time between L.A. and Oklahoma. In this episode, hear Thunder Jackson talk about how his father was an Elvis impersonator and got him a license to play in bars as a teenager, creating the moniker Thunder Jackson, and returning to Oklahoma.

Noeline Hofmann

Noeline Hofmann was playing bars after quitting her job working on a ranch when Zach Bryan came across her singing on TikTok in 2023. The two recorded a duet of that song “Purple Gas” which kickstarted the Canadian twenty-something's country career that has continued to overlap with Oklahoma. She toured with Stillwater's Wyatt Flores and had her first American sold-out headlining date in Tulsa earlier this year. She’s spent this summer opening up for The Turnpike Troubadours and Zach Bryan on their European tour, and is opening for them and Oklahoma rock band Kings of Leon in San Francisco this Friday, Aug. 15. Matthew Viriyapah spoke to her before her show in Oklahoma City at 89th Street this spring to talk about those Oklahoma connections, her song "Purple Gas" and her latest music.

Decolonizing Wealth with Edgar Villanueva

Edgar Villanueva’s story begins within the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, but his path was uniquely shaped by his experience as an "urban native" growing up in Raleigh. Being the only Native student in his school for most of his life, Edgar navigated a dual identity, spending summers in his tribal community while living a suburban life during the school year. It wasn't until college that he fully leaned into his heritage, joining Native student organizations and eventually leading his family through the process of formal tribal enrollment. His professional entry into the world of philanthropy was almost accidental. After starting his career in public health, he was recruited by a foundation to manage health grants. Initially, he viewed philanthropy through a "savior" lens, excited by the prospect of having millions of dollars to "save the world." However, as he moved deeper into the ivory towers of the industry, he began to see the disconnect between the wealthy institutions and the actual needs of the communities they intended to serve. The realization that philanthropy was often an extension of colonial dynamics led Edgar to write his groundbreaking book, Decolonizing Wealth. He recounts the internal struggle of being a Native man in a field built on stolen land and labor, and how that tension eventually fueled his mission to transform the industry. Today, his journey from a young man seeking his own cultural roots to a global leader in social finance serves as a powerful testament to the importance of indigenous perspectives in modern economics.

Clay Street Unit

While Clay Street Unit was formed in Denver, most of their members are transplants, with lead singer Sam Walker originally hailing from Alabama. There, he was in a jam band that covered Phish and Grateful Dead songs. Clay Street Unit’s first album, titled Sin & Squalor, was scheduled for release last year through a Sony label. But, when the label folded and the release of the bluegrass band's album was uncertain, it was just another thing for Sam Walker and the group to weather. In this episode, Sam Walker talks about finally being able to release the album and the mix of influences that make up the sextet's sound.

Horton Records President Brian Horton
