Harm Reduction Approaches to Opioid Use

In this episode, we’ll talk with a nurse whose interest in the field was sparked after she was the recipient of nursing services as a pregnant young mother. She’ll reflect on her current work: harm reduction specific to opioid use and the extensive process to develop a community drug prevention strategy. Giving Up On Fitting In | Renee Laforet

Renee Laforet is no longer trying to fit in. For much of her young adult life, Renee was the “only” in many boardrooms. As a Black, female, C-Suite executive in tech, she strived hard to fit in. The constant overachieving led Renee into serious illness, imposter syndrome and impossible pressures put on herself and her family. Eventually, Renee gave up trying to fit in - and woke up to a whole new version of success. Today, Renee is most interested in becoming – Becoming her own personal best version of success. Supporting Childbearing Families

Two public health nurses will share the challenges and successes they’ve experienced while supporting childbearing age families. Community Campaigns & School Health

This episode will introduce listeners to two different areas of public health nursing practice: leading a population health promotion campaign, and working in a school health role. We’ll learn about the development of a large-scale campaign to support effective parenting; an example of how public health nursing can influence the entire population. Listeners will also hear how the school public health nurse works with students, teachers, principals, and parents to support the physical and emotional health of children and youth. 5. Access Denied - Tech at the Border

Shownotes Episode 5Transcript available HEREContent Note: This episode mentions children in immigration detention and residential schools.Borders have long been sites of colonial enforcement about who can come and go and how Indigenous peoples are treated. Canada is no exception. Increasingly, governments look to technology to make potentially life-or-death decisions about whether a person fleeing danger should be allowed to cross a border. What happens when that technology reinforces bias and makes unreliable choices? Author and activist Harsha Walia leads us through how borders came to exist and how Canada has used them to keep out "undesirables" from the country with tools like the Safe Third Country Agreement. We connect with Joy Henderson, an Afro-Indigenous person whose own experience with the oppressive power of borders means they're unable to claim status in Canada. We chat with Jamie Duncan, a PhD student and researcher about how deploying artificial intelligence at the border can reinforce systemic racism in some disturbing ways.
