Harm Reduction Approaches to Opioid Use

Community Campaigns & School Health

This episode will introduce listeners to two different areas of public health nursing practice: leading a population health promotion campaign, and working in a school health role. We’ll learn about the development of a large-scale campaign to support effective parenting; an example of how public health nursing can influence the entire population. Listeners will also hear how the school public health nurse works with students, teachers, principals, and parents to support the physical and emotional health of children and youth. Each nurse will offer a peek into a typical work day. While their roles are different, similar skills in collaboration, advocacy and innovation are foundational to their work. 2. Street Surveillance and The War on Drugs

And we are the enemy” - Hugh Lampkin Hugh Lampkin leads us through his experience as a harm reduction trailblazer in the Downtown Eastside with the grassroots group VANDU. He tells us how he and other activists had to smuggle naloxone from a conference before it was widely available in Vancouver, and learn exactly how this lifesaving drug works to reverse overdoses. We also visit Hugh's friend, Dr. Mark Tyndall, to see the MySafe machine, a smart harm reduction intervention making waves in the community - what benefits it has and what questions still remain when it comes to systemic racism in tech solutions. We speak with Vince Tao from VANDU and Meenakshi Mannoe from PIVOT Legal Society to examine the fundamental questions at play when it comes to the war on drugs, homelessness, and police violence. *note: MySafe is an important tool in the range of harm reduction interventions available to interrupt drug poisoning deaths. Today, Randy Gunn, BULLWEALTH’s VP and Portfolio Manager, sits down with Mike Werbowecki, Senior Vice President at NFP Canada, who brings more than 35 years of experience in the insurance industry, primarily within group pension plans at firms such as Clarica, Equitable Life, and Manulife. Their discussion focuses on employer-sponsored pension plans in Canada, with particular attention to Defined Benefit and Defined Contribution plans, including the current state of these plans, their limitations, the responsibilities of plan sponsors, and best practices for achieving strong outcomes for plan members. Mike also highlights the challenges both plan sponsors and members are likely to face in the years ahead, particularly as the shift from Defined Benefit to Defined Contribution plans continues. 5. Access Denied - Tech at the Border

Canada is no exception. Increasingly, governments look to technology to make potentially life-or-death decisions about whether a person fleeing danger should be allowed to cross a border. What happens when that technology reinforces bias and makes unreliable choices? Author and activist Harsha Walia leads us through how borders came to exist and how Canada has used them to keep out "undesirables" from the country with tools like the Safe Third Country Agreement. We connect with Joy Henderson, an Afro-Indigenous person whose own experience with the oppressive power of borders means they're unable to claim status in Canada. We chat with Jamie Duncan, a PhD student and researcher about how deploying artificial intelligence at the border can reinforce systemic racism in some disturbing ways.
