How the Teenage Brain Works, with Lisa Damour

Our brains go completely WILD when we go through our teenage years. It’s a time where it feels like every disagreement with our parents turns into World War III, and every idea that could get us killed sounds like the most fun we could ever have. In this episode, we get into the science of what the brain is doing during the teenage years with clinical psychologist Dr. Lisa Damour. Lisa co-wrote the college textbook “Abnormal Psychology” and was a consultant on Disney's “Inside Out 2.” She takes us deep into the developing brain to explain what makes teens tick. Plus, we talk about mental health, how boys and girls are struggling in different ways, and tips for anyone who has big feelings.   Find our transcript here: https://tinyurl.com/ScienceVsTeens Check out Lisa Damour’s podcast, Ask Lisa: The Psychology of Raising Tweens & Teens, here: https://open.spotify.com/show/2GIh790via4L7oGAJ2mz1b  In this episode, we cover: (00:00) Meet Lisa Damour (05:33) The teenage brain (11:20) Big feelings, what they mean, and how to respond  (19:56) The teenage brain and abstract thinking (22:34) Teenagers and risk-taking (29:18) How long does adolescence really last??  (33:47) The different kinds of popularity (41:58) Should we be worried about kids these days? Silification Geology (OPALS) with Patrice Rey

Gems of lightning and shadows. Rainbow fossils. Underground tunnel homes. Mysterious sedimentary origins. Aboriginal dreamtime stories. Armored snails. Questionable song lyrics. It’s opals, folks. And world expert geophysicist and University of Sydney professor Dr. Patrice Rey is here to talk about why he left France to explore the geological mysteries of the Outback. Should you get an opal engagement ring? Can they get wet? What’s the difference between an Australian and Ethiopian opal? What was one doing in a Kenyan cave 3000 years ago? What’s a Kyoto Opal vs. opalite? The Raw, Unprocessed Truth: The 345th Evolutionary Lens with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying

On this, our 345th Evolutionary Lens livestream, we discuss immigration, AI, and rawness. First: a new Harper’s article chronicles the effects on local people of the mass migration across the Darién Gap in Panama between 2021 and 2025, and what has happened since the number of people coming up from Colombia has dropped to a trickle. The reporting on the ground is excellent—human and honest—while the political analysis is naïve at best. Then: what is it to be raw, how is it inherently human, and what is its relationship to grief, and to AI?   ***** Our sponsors:    Cozy Earth: Head to https://cozyearth.com and use code DARKHORSE for an exclusive 20% off on home and sleepwear. Hacking The Kendama With Physics

Michael hands Hannah a kendama, the Japanese cup-and-ball toy, and asks her to land a single catch. Then he brings out one built for him by Adam Savage of MythBusters and explains why a heavier kendama is a completely different physics problem. A kendama looks like a children's toy. It is really a pendulum, a lesson in angular momentum and a catching problem borrowed from spacecraft docking. Michael and Hannah get into why the swing timing barely changes when the ball gets heavier, why the trick is to match the ball's velocity rather than grab at it, why bending your knees on the catch is doing real work, and why the paint finish on a kendama changes how it plays. Then Hannah and Michael take on your questions: what would actually happen if you flew into Jupiter and kept going, whether there is a mathematical way to swim faster, and which books they'd hand an adult who wants to get back into maths after school ruined it. ------------------- For more information about Cancer Research UK, their research, breakthroughs and how you can support them, visit https://cancerresearchuk.org/restisscience Cancer Research UK is a registered charity in England and Wales (1089464), Scotland (SC041666), the Isle of Man (1103) and Jersey (247). How to Make a Difference: Part 2

Think about the last time you had a discouraging thought. Maybe you told yourself, "This won't work. I'm not cut out for this." Did you take that thought as fact? Last week, we talked with psychologist Martin Seligman about why some people come to believe that their actions don’t matter. In the second part of our conversation, he explains how we can strengthen our sense of agency, learn to see new possibilities, and build confidence in our ability to shape what happens next. Anyone who has struggled with depression knows that it feels terrible. But is there a point to that terrible feeling? We consider a new way of thinking about depression in our latest YouTube video -- check it out, and be sure to subscribe so you don't miss our future videos.   Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. How corals tell us climate change is supersizing El Niño

The El Niño underway in the Pacific Ocean is a natural climate phenomenon but its warming effects are being boosted by climate change. Researchers recently used corals growing around the Galapagos Islands to create a local temperature record of the ocean going back 1,000 years. Ep 223 ALS: Unraveling the mystery

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, has long mystified the medical community and brought tremendous sorrow to those impacted by the condition. But to tell the story of ALS as one solely of tragedy would do a disservice to those who have long fought to develop an effective treatment or raise awareness. Because it is through their tireless efforts that those with ALS will eventually be able to rewrite their own ending. In today’s episode, we attempt to convey the full picture of ALS: from what we know about its causes to the earliest medical descriptions, from the baseball player whose impassioned speech captured the public’s hearts to the promising research on the horizon. Climate Uncertainty: The Coolest Year for the Rest of Our Lives? with Zeke Hausfather

The El Niño now building in the tropical Pacific is unlike anything in the historical record, and it's arriving on top of decades of warming. Together, they could push global temperatures to roughly 1.8°C (3.2ºF) above pre-industrial levels next year, offering a preview of what may become the new normal within a decade. As the rate of warming continues to accelerate and public attention swings between alarm and fatigue, how can we clearly understand where the planet is actually headed and what it will take to adapt? In this episode, Nate is joined by climate scientist Zeke Hausfather to break down the numbers and metrics within climate science, and translate what they will actually feel like for humanity. He explains how global temperature is measured, what the new generation of IPCC scenarios reveals about plausible futures, and why there's still uncertainty in just how much warmer we'll get by the year 2100. Zeke also unpacks how declining aerosol pollution has sped up warming and other climate variables that have actively emerging research behind them. While certain amounts of warming are locked in, he emphasizes that there is still a wide difference between every degree of warming, and the actions we take now will determine climate futures for centuries to come. How does the IPCC attempt to incorporate the most unpredictable factor for climate models – human behavior – and what do their current projections estimate? If we reached zero emissions tomorrow, would the planet cool back down, or are we locked into the warming we already have? And in a world growing weary of crisis headlines, how can we hold the reality of climate change without tipping into denial or despair?   About Zeke Hausfather:  Zeke is a lead author of the IPCC Seventh Assessment Report, and was a contributing author to the Sixth Assessment Report. He also authored the climate trends chapter of the Fifth U.S. National Climate Assessment, and has testified as an expert witness before the U.S. House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. At Berkeley Earth, Zeke helps produce one of the world's primary global surface temperature records. He is also a Climate Science Contributor at Carbon Brief. At Stripe, Zeke leads climate research for Frontier, a $2 billion advance market commitment accelerating permanent carbon removal.    Show Notes and More   Watch this video episode on YouTube   Want to learn the broad overview of The Great Simplification in 30 minutes? Grass Apes

When you think about grass, what do you think of? Pool parties? Suburbs? Allergies? What about: human history? It turns out, unassuming grass, which exists on every continent, has an epic story to tell. One of transforming the planet, and … us. From what we eat, to how our body might be shaped and the ways we perceive the world. Senior Correspondent Molly Webster speaks to biologist and writer David George Haskell in this tiny ode to Grass. This episode was inspired by “Grass Fed”, a Radiolab outdoor theatre performance at Little Island in New York City. “Grass Fed” featured biologist and writer David George Haskell; Foley artist Steven Wendt; and dance company, Pilobolus.
