    Excavating the Epstein files

British journalist Vicky Ward first profiled sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in 2003 for Vanity Fair. The experience was so alarming and stressful that she went into labor with her twins at 30 weeks, two months early. More than 20 years later, Ward, still following the case, talks with Tonya Mosley about the fallout from the millions of publicly released documents, and why this story took so long to come out. 🐺Inside each of us there are two wolves. They are named 'Shifty' and 'Freaky'.🐺 Which one wins? Well it doesn't matter because they're both demons so maybe try to starve both of them out. Or spit in their faces and steal their name tags, like Sun Wukong does. No wrong answers because, in the world of the Journey to the West, anything goes. But for real, we catch back up with Monkey, Sandy, Pigsy, and the Tang Monk on their travels as they enter year 14 and the final leg of their journey. But are they ready for what awaits them? 😈 The Creature: IntuloAn evil walking and talking lizard who just wants to watch the world die. But only if he has to die, eventually. He does? Justice for Murder Bimbo!

Murder Bimbo is a new book about a sex worker-turned assassin … and it’s the debut novel by Rebecca Novack, a former priest-in-training. The story follows a sex worker nicknamed Murder Bimbo who is hired by the government to kill a right-wing politician. She does the deed, makes her escape, and tells her story in emails to a social justice podcaster. But things aren’t quite what they seem. So is she a scapegoat … or is she a liar? This week, Rebecca dives into the wild premise of the book, how she almost became a priest and the challenges of writing a political novel in fraught times.  Liked this conversation? Love, Race & the ‘Mixed Marriage Project’

Almost a decade after her father's death, legal scholar Dorothy Roberts had to confront the 25 boxes of his research collecting dust in her office. Roberts' parents, a white anthropologist and a Black woman from Jamaica, spent years doing research on interracial marriage and intimacy in Chicago. Her new memoir, ‘The Mixed Marriage Project,’ draws from their records. She says the project permeated every corner of her upbringing, and now, as a scholar herself, she’s reflecting on her life and racial identity with a new lens. The Adventure of the Missing Three-Quarter, Part 1

Sherlock Holmes has a new case to solve, and it's one that will take him into one of the few domains with which he is unfamiliar: that of amateur sport. Holmes and Watson have been approached by Mr. Cyril Overton, of the rugby union team at Trinity College, Cambridge, about one of their star players who has gone missing: three-quarter Godfrey Staunton. The young man disappeared from his hotel last night after receiving a mysterious telegram, and Overton is desperate to get him back. Adding a wrinkle to the matter is the fact that Staunton is the heir to one of the richest men in England, Lord Mount-James. Though Holmes is not a man for amateur sport, there's still no one better to determine what could have happened to the missing three-quarter. As the investigation begins, let it soothe your mind and carry you off into a night of warm and peaceful slumber. ----- Welcome to the Sherlock Holmes Bedtime Stories podcast. The Ruby Ridge siege & conspiracy-laced politics in America

We look back at the 1992 siege at Ruby Ridge in Idaho, where gunfire left two civilians and a deputy U.S. Marshal dead. Chris Jennings’ new book explores the apocalyptic religious beliefs that led Randy Weaver and his family to move to a remote cabin, armed to resist government intrusion. He traces the impact of Ruby Ridge on the spread of conspiratorial anti-government and white-supremacist movements. His book is ‘End of Days.’Also, Maureen Corrigan reviews the memoir 'Dizzy,’ by Rachel Weaver.   Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoices NPR Privacy Policy

How to Make Agents Curious While Also Impressing Them With Your Line Level Writing

In this special Books with Hooks segment, the team sits down with author Sarah Miller-Adams to workshop her query letter for Bilateral Breathing, an upmarket, literary-leaning novel about three mid-career women in medicine on the brink of personal and professional collapse. They break down what’s working (a striking voice, emotional depth, and powerful themes) and what needs sharpening—especially clarity around plot, POV, power dynamics, and how to handle multi-POV queries. From title choices to character introductions, stakes, and specificity, this episode is a masterclass in how to make agents both curious and impressed. The Secret Lives of Ordinary People

Dylan Thomas is one of the 20th century’s legendary poets.  In this episode, English journalist David Aaronovitch joins Shilo to discuss Thomas’ 1954 play Under Milk Wood, a portrait of a small Welsh seaside town, originally produced for radio.  With rich, musical language, Thomas reveals the secret interior lives of the villagers—their dreams, lusts, resentments, and longings—without condescension, inviting the listener to see that “these people are you” and to recognize one’s own hidden thoughts in even the most comic or disturbing characters.  They discuss how the play is exceptional in a flattened, cliché-ridden culture obsessed with exterior image and dismissive of the complexity of ordinary people.  Old School is proudly brought to you by the Jack Miller Center.
