Hosted by photographer, author, and former comedian David duChemin, A Beautiful Anarchy is a deeply human, honest, and insightful mostly-weekly kick in the pants for anyone who longs to create anything with soul and too often finds themselves mud-wrestling with the muse to do so. A Beautiful Anarchy is a candid ongoing exploration of what it means to be an everyday creator, whether you're a writer, photographer, sculptor, or a puppeteer who works exclusively with vintage macrame owls. The struggles and rewards of bringing something new into the world are universal, and you’re not alone. Let's talk about it.

    Episode 80: Lay Another Brick

Sometimes the thing we're building, whether that's an exciting new project or a whole career, feels so big and overwhelming it seems impossible. Focusing on that bigger thing, we wonder if we'll ever get traction on our efforts to build it. So what do we do? Dream smaller? Settle for less? Oh, God, I hope not. Let's talk about it.

    Episode 79: More Than Fun

    Episode 79: More Than Fun

Isn't art-making and creativity meant to be fun? Why is it so often a source of struggle than anything a sane person would call fun? And are the challenges worth it? Or is there something bigger at play here, something more than fun? I have this feeling we create because we must, because it's part of who we are, and that we do it because it's hard. Because that's where flow, transformation, and meaning are to be found, or created. Let's talk about it.

    Episode 78: For The Introverts

    Episode 78: For The Introverts

Introversion seems to have become a movement lately and as someone with strong life-long introverted characteristics, I think it's great that we're finally celebrating those quieter qualities, but there's also a danger in allowing the label to define and limit us. Jung said introversion and extroversion were about where we got our energy, our fuel; maybe it's time we stopped yakking about which pump we get out gas at, focused more on where we're going with our creativity, and got in the car. Let's talk about it.

    Episode 77: A Different Episode

    Episode 77: A Different Episode

You're different. About the only thing that we all share in common is that we are so very different. So why do we learn so early to blend in and put so much effort into being the same? Carl Jung talks about the society rewarding the diminuation of personality and I think it's the artists role to resist that, to not only be different, unapologetically, but to make a difference. Let's talk about it.

Episode 76: A Word With Pareto

Episode 76: A Word With Pareto

19th-century economist Vilfredo Pareto was out in his garden when he noticed only 20% of his pea plants were producing 80% of the peas. Fast forward to today and the Pareto Principle, also known as the 80/20 Rule is familiar to many in the business world, but what's it got to do with you and your creative life, and is there something more for us in this idea than what is so often reduced to notions of productivity and profitability? Let's talk about it.

    Episode 75: More Than Time

    Episode 75: More Than Time

We need time to do our best work, but not only time. We need the internal resources to pay the emotional costs, and time without attention, focus, and curiosity probably only leads to cranking out the work, and that neither honours to muse nor benefits our eventual audiences. As we return to something a little closer to normal life, I worry I'm not going to have the same kind of time or internal resources that slower pace of the pandemic has allowed me. Let's talk about it.

A Different Episode

Thank you for being willing to be vulnerable and tell us about how being “different” cost you certain privileges, recognition, acceptance, etc. While you don’t reference it as such, we’re now in a time where differences of opinion are not tolerated. Willingness to think outside the box that’s been pushed at us without consent is a no-no. Once again the experiences of being shunned, laughed at, and ridiculed come to the fore. While you connected this to our art, I believe it applies to all parts of our lives.

A Beautiful Podcast

This has become my favourite podcast to listen to. There’s so much here that connects with who I am and who I aspire to be. I always feel lifted up a bit higher after listening to an episode. So grateful to have stumbled upon this!

Philosophy for the Creative Life

Years ago, I was delighted to find a book review for “A Beautiful Anarchy,” the book, in a photography magazine. That was when I was first introduced to David duChemin. I love the book, and have read it several times. When he started the podcast, a few years ago, I was thrilled to have a 3x a month thought provoking nugget of philosophy on the creative life. On the 4th week, he sends “On the Make,” to my email. I look forward to these every weekend. It is always relatable, always current, and always inspiring. Life for artists can often be solitary and knowing that there is someone else out there in the world, asking the same questions, thinking about the big picture, is pure gold.
