Working closely with Autism Canada, she co-developed the Self-Advocacy Guide for Cancer Patients on the Autism Spectrum, a resource recognized with the King Charles III Coronation Medal. She continues to collaborate with organizations such as Ovarian Cancer Canada, Hospice Calgary, and Wellspring to support equitable, story-based care through workshops, guides, and webinar series. Her publications span academic and public-facing platforms—including Intima, Ars Medica, and Anthropologica—and address end-of-life narratives, autism and cancer, and Indigenous ethnohistory. She has presented nationally on psychosocial oncology, health humanities, and patient navigation, and contributed to the development of advocacy programs. Her work blends scholarly inquiry with collaborative engagement, offering frameworks for listening, legacy-making, and resilience across medical and cultural borders. In both institutional and grassroots spaces, her approach emphasizes relationality, co-authorship, and the transformative possibilities of story.Thing(s) of the Day: Self Advocacy Guide for Cancer Patients on the Autism Spectrum (being revised - this is the original) The Lindsey Interview Project Paula Holmes-Rodman Interview ____________________________ Autistic Tidbits & Tangents is a biweekly podcast, co-hosted by Kara Dymond, Bruce Petherick, & Maja Toudal, centered around topics relevant to autism and the lives of autistic people. We also talk about disassociation, anti-miscenegation laws, the intertwined nature of racism, ableism, and other forms of oppression, and the King of Pop.  This episode comes 8 months after it was recorded so we promise, there is no snow in Calgary, Vancouver, or Toronto at the moment! 2025-08-04

Ep. 48 - Intuition, Improvisation, & Indigenous Knowledge-Keeping (with Julianna Maggrah)

Bruce and Kara chat with Julianna Maggrah about Indigenous ways of being, doing, and knowing; her late diagnosis; exploring Indigenous views of autism; thoughts on creativity and expression; and the interplay of all of these topics, together. Guest Bio: Julianna Maggrah is a 2 Spirit, neurodivergent Indigenous woman born and raised in northern Saskatchewan. Her family were trappers and hunters and loved to live off of the land, and so Julianna was born with a connection to the land. Although she can’t stand the idea of setting traps or hunting, she connects to the land by picking medicines and taking her dog out to roam the forest. Rather than saying she is from the north, Julianna would prefer to say that she is from the land and the stars as her connection is to the spirit of the earth and not a town or city. As an Indigenous person, she grew up experiencing the effects of generational trauma, which led her to discover the importance of mental health and understanding one’s mind and experiences. She is an advocate for mental health and has made a short documentary about her own struggles with depression and anxiety and has worked with the CBC Creator Network to make mini documentaries about her 2 Spirit journey, searching for her culture, and a guided mindfulness meditation in the forest. Most recently, Julianna wrote an article for CBC about how learning about Indigenous perspectives on autism helped her accept her autism diagnosis. Julianna studied media arts production at Saskatchewan Polytechnic and interned at MBC radio. Shortly after finishing school, she got a job as a video journalist at CTV. She realized she could combine her desire to help people with her love for creativity and art, and now creates content about subjects that she feels are important.  In 2022, Julianna was selected for CBC and NSI’s New Indigenous Voices Program and she received the Queen’s Jubilee Platinum Medal for her work creating an open space for mental health online. In 2023 she placed second in Red Nation Media’s Native Women Write Pitch Competition. In 2024 she was shortlisted for RBC’s Emerging Indigenous Filmmaker’s Award. She is currently in a production mentorship with Cinema Ascent and is writing a documentary about the spiritual gifts of autism. Julianna has future plans to bridge arts, therapy, and culture to help people heal.
