Baruch Spinoza (1632–1677), born Benedito de Espinosa, was a Dutch philosopher of Sephardic Jewish origin from the Dutch Republic. He is considered one of the great rationalists of the 17th-century philosophy, laying the groundwork for the 18th-century Enlightenment and modern biblical criticism. Spinoza’s philosophical accomplishments are predominantly encapsulated in his magnum opus, "Ethica, ordine geometrico demonstrata" (Ethics), published posthumously in 1677. In it, he presents an ethical vision unfolding from a monistic metaphysical system where God is synonymous with the natural world, arguing that God exists as the singular substance of reality and everything else is a mode of God's attributes, namely thought and extension. His work in metaphysics insists that there is only one substance in all existence, which he equated with God. While traditional views held that God was a separate creator to the universe, Spinoza's philosophy embraced a form of pantheism, which has since influenced both secular and religious interpretations of spirituality. Spinoza also delved into politics, offering one of the 17th century's most sophisticated treatises on political theory in his "Tractatus Theologico-Politicus" (Theologico-Political Treatise). Here he argued for the democratic ideals of religious tolerance and separation of church and state while critiquing the superstitions that pervaded religious thought. His ideas on the self, the universe, and theology were highly controversial during his lifetime and led to his excommunication from the Jewish community of Amsterdam at the age of 23. Spinoza lived a relatively solitary life, sustaining himself primarily through lens grinding and modest means. Despite the controversy, his philosophical ideas have had a lasting impact on Western thought, influencing later thinkers such as Goethe, Hegel, Einstein, and many others. Spinoza's work rejected the dualistic thought that dominated much of philosophical inquiry, suggesting instead a form of determinism where everything happens through the necessity of nature, thereby famously linking individual morality to an overarching structure of being.
