BC Society of Transition Houses is happy to launch the BCSTH Podcast. On this show, you will hear reflections on challenges in the gender-based violence sector and how our member organizations are rising to meet them. We will be featuring stories of tough realities, collaboration, innovation, activism and hope in a field where successes are often hard won. Our organization is based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on the traditional and unceded territory of the Musqueam (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm) Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh) and Tsleil-Waututh (səlilwətaɬ) Nations .

    Training in C.A.M.P.

    Each summer, thousands of young people travel from across the country to work a unique summer job. Tree planters are typically paid by the tree, earning cents for every seedling they plant, while living often off grid in remote work camps as they replant previously logged sites across Canada. The job can be a bonding experience, but what happens when camp no longer feels safe? Join us on this episode to speak with Tina Daye of C.A.M.P., the Camp Assault Mitigation Project from NSDP, who delivers in-person and virtual sexual assault and harassment prevention trainings to tree planting camps and other remote work sites in northern BC.     In the final episode in our two-episode miniseries focusing on our member organization Carrier Sekani Family Services, we attend their 20th Anniversary Highway of Tears Symposium in Prince George, BC. We speak with Mary Teegee-Gray, CAO at Carrier Sekani Family Services and a community leader in addressing the MMIWG2SLGBTQIA+ crisis along Highway 16, we learn about the Red Dress Society in Prince George with its president Tammy Meise, and we watch the unveiling of the Pillar of Hope, the project featured in episode 1 of this series.     Pillars of Hope and Strength, CSFS Part 1/2

    If you’ve worked in the gender-based violence sector in British Columbia, you’ve heard of the Highway of Tears. Twenty years ago, a symposium was held to address crisis of Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people (MMIWG2S), along Highway 16, running from Prince George to Prince Rupert, BC. Today, our member Carrier Sekani Family Services is looking to fulfill one of the recommendations put forward by the surviving family and friends of victims and bring hope and strength to their community of Prince George, BC with an unprecedented memorial monument – The Pillars of Hope and Strength. We spoke with two team members from CSFS leading this project, Michelle Jones, Director of Justice and Annie Weinard, Project Coordinator, on their personal history, reflections on the pillars, and their hopes for the future.
