Beyond Borders

TRT World

Welcome to the Beyond Borders world tour. While much of the media talks about people, we listen to people. Telling the forgotten stories shaping our shared history. Beyond Borders is a global study of the human experience. An exploration of what unites and divides us, through the eyes of ordinary people living often extraordinary lives.  From Sri Lanka’s former child soldiers, to Greenlandic inuits fighting for justice, and New York’s rat-catchers risking their lives - you can watch our entire back-catalogue of shows here: www.youtube.com/@BeyondBordersTRTWorld Beyond Borders is a TRT World original production Hosted on Acast. 1. Who's Hiring Sweden's Child Killers?

    Who's Hiring Sweden's Child Killers?

This time on The Beyond Borders Podcast, we go behind the story of Sweden's Child Killers: Victims or Criminals? - the documentary that asks how Sweden's gangs turned children into contract killers, and whether anyone can stop them. This is what it was actually like on the ground. From a murder scene we arrived at less than 24 hours after a teenager was shot dead outside his home, to a police weapons cache holding 27,000 seized items including grenades, assault rifles, and 3D printed handguns. Among those we meet are three alleged gang members who agreed to only talk to us in a cold basement. All three had a casualness about violence and criminal behaviour that was difficult to reconcile with how young they were. We also go inside a community centre that makes a simple argument: £200,000 a year to keep kids off the street, or £700,000 a year to keep one person behind bars. The maths isn't complicated. And we ask why it's the children of immigrants, not the first generation, who are most at risk of being recruited. Sweden calls it a national emergency. The age of criminal responsibility has just been lowered to 13. But few think that’s the answer. The story behind the story. 2. The Country That Evicts Its Own People

The Country That Evicts Its Own People

Denmark is one of the happiest places on earth. So why is its government forcing thousands of people out of their homes on account of where they live and who they are? Adam Charlton and David Foster go inside Denmark's controversial "Parallel Societies" policy - a social experiment that's demolished neighbourhoods and broken up communities. Now it’s being legally challenged as potentially unlawful racial discrimination.  They meet the residents left behind in near-empty tower blocks, the lawyer fighting to bring the whole thing down, and the activists who took 50,000 signatures to Parliament, only to be ignored. The Danish government calls it integration. The people living through it call it discrimination.  What happens when the state decides your community is the problem?  Watch the full documentary, "Ghetto Blasted: Integration or Discrimination?" and tell us: is this pioneering social policy, or state-sanctioned discrimination?  Leave your comments here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XReHIUWekU&t=30s Hosts: Adam Charlton, David Foster Executive Producer: Alice Tegg Editor: Nathalie Kantaris Diaz and Emine Gezici Ustundag From neighbours living with the threat of war between NATO and Russia on their doorstep, to breakaway micro nations, repentant child soldiers, and rat-catchers risking their lives - you can find our entire back-catalogue here: https://www.youtube.com/@BeyondBordersTRTWorld Hosted on Acast.
