Beyond the Ice Podcast

Centring connection in hockey and taking an inside look at what has defined success, beyond the ice. Researchers from Cape Breton University's Department of Education, Department of Communication & Languages, and Department of Experiential Studies in Community and Sport explore the role of social emotional learning in the sport of hockey. These conversations with coaches, players, parents, and hockey operations staff will center on relationship building, effective communication practices, and leadership skills that enhances confidence, motivation and collective performance.

    Beyond the Ice with Mike Bara

    Centering connection in hockey and taking an inside look at what has defined success beyond the ice. Mike Bara is the Senior Manager of Coaching Development at Hockey Canada, where he contributes his expertise in coaching education, program design, and leadership development. With over 15 years of experience, Mike has played a key role in advancing national coaching initiatives and shaping curriculum for the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP). In his role, Mike has planned and managed national coaching task teams, led curriculum and resource development, and delivered High Performance 2 national seminars—overseeing assessment and evaluation processes that ensure quality and consistency. He has also guided national initiatives in coach, evaluator, and facilitator development through conferences and training seminars, while supporting provincial partners in delivering coaching and instructional stream programs. Mike co-led the Hockey Canada Long-Term Player Development program and designed practical evaluation strategies to strengthen the link between policy and practice. Beyond Hockey Canada, Mike has served as Director of Coach Development for the Okotoks Oilers Athletic Association (OOAA), leading coach recruitment and selection, as well as professional development for coaching staff. He has also contributed more than 15 years to Hockey Alberta as a contractor, instructor, coach, facilitator, and evaluator— coaching and mentoring coaches at elite levels including Junior A, U18 AAA, U15 AAA, and the U15 Hockey Alberta Spring Showcase (Alberta Cup). Mike is a Certified Facilitator, trained evaluator, and Master Coach Developer through the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) / Coaching Association of Canada. He also holds a Network Technician degree from CDI College in Calgary.     Beyond the Ice with Sylvain Couturier & Isabelle Morrier

    Centering connection in hockey and taking an inside look at what has defined success, beyond the ice. Sylvain Couturier & Isabelle Morrier are involved in the sport of hockey in many capacities through their roles in business development, organizational operations, and as parents. Isabelle is the former Director of Operations with both the Acadie-Bathurst Titan as well as with the Cape Breton Eagles. She is a passionate community leader with vast hockey management experiences. Sylvain is a former professional hockey player, spending time within the NHL, AHL, IHL and European leagues. He was the General Manager of Acadie-Bathurst Titan and is the current General Manager of the Cape Breton Eagles.     Beyond the Ice with Doug MacLean

    Centering connection in hockey and taking an inside look at what has defined success, beyond the ice. Doug MacLean is no stranger to the Hockey landscape in Canada; playing varsity hockey for the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers and coaching at the University of New Brunswick, before starting his 24 year career in the NHL. Doug served in various positions within the National Hockey League including Assistant Coach, Head Coach, General Manager, and President. Including being behind the bench with the St. Louis Blues, Washington Capitals, Detroit Red Wings, Columbus Blue Jackets and the Florida Panthers organizations. Beyond the ice, Doug holds a Bachelor of Education and a Masters Degree in Educational Psychology. He is a beloved former Canadian sportscaster working in television and radio as a Hockey Analyst with Sportsnet Canada for 9 years.  In 2023, Doug became a Best Selling author with his first book "Draft Day" and has consistently hit the bestseller lists in Canada. Doug sits down with us to discuss his start in the sport of hockey, the important lessons learned along the way, the value of connection and education, and what player development means today.     Beyond the Ice with Marcus Kearsey

Marcus Kearsey is an 18 year old from Deer Lake, Newfoundland who grew up loving the sport of hockey. Currently, a player in the QMJHL with the Charlottetown Islanders, and the 2024 recipient of the QMJHL Humanitarian of the Year award, Marcus has found connection and community on his new island. He sits down with us to chat about the importance of being a leader on and off the ice and why creating 'Kearsey's Kids', a program partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters, is such an integral initiative for not only the kids involved, but the entire Islanders' organization.     Beyond the Ice with Cam Squires

    Centering connection in hockey and taking an inside look at what has defined success, beyond the ice. Born and raised in Charlottetown PEI, Cam Squires played minor hockey in the Charlottetown Minor Hockey Association for the Charlottetown Abbeys. He played along many of his friends, creating some of the best hockey memories. Cam moved away from home for the first time at the age of 15 to Rochester, New York, and played at Bishop Kearney Selects Prep School. At 16, Squires returned to Canada, beginning his QMJ career, which has taken off during his three seasons with the Cape Breton Eagles. Cam considers Cape Breton to be a second home, and he credits the community for welcoming him with open arms. It is because of this that Cam feels passionate about doing his part and helping in the community, especially if it means he can be a role model for many young hockey players. In 2023, Cam was named the QMJ Humanitarian of the Year. Not only did he put up impressive numbers on the ice, but he also made a significant impact in the community. Cam selected the Boys and Girls Club of Cape Breton as his charity of choice and thus created the Squires Squad. He donated season tickets to the Youth Non-profit Charity, which allowed families to attend the Eagles home games. Cam has also volunteered his time at the club to provide a mentorship service, and even organized a ball hockey tournament that engaged the community.     Beyond the Ice with Chris Culligan

    Centering connection in hockey and taking an inside look at what has defined success, beyond the ice. Born and raised in Howie Centre, Chris Culligan, has had a notable hockey career in Canada and Abroad as both player and coach. From 2004 to 2009, Chris showcased his exceptional skills in front of a hometown crowd as a player, and former Captain, with the then Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, leaving a memorable mark during his tenure. From there, Chris continued to make waves at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) from 2009 to 2014, where he was a 2x national champion. During these years Chris also represented Canada on the international stage. Following his university career, Culligan ventured into the realm of professional hockey, spending three impactful years playing abroad. Recently, his commitment to the sport extended behind the bench as he moved into coaching. Bringing his wealth of experience back to the Cape Breton Eagles, Chris served as an assistant coach for three years, imparting his knowledge and passion for the game to the next generation of players. Now the head coach of the local U18 program, Chris continues to contribute to the development of young talent. In parallel, he established "Culligan Hockey Development," a small group skill development business focusing on both in-season and off-season training, shaping the skills and futures of aspiring hockey players.     Beyond the Ice with Mike Chiasson

    Centering connection in hockey and taking an inside look at what has defined success, beyond the ice. Mike Chiasson is a former goalie from Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia. He is the current Manager of Youth Hockey for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Goalie Development Professional at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. Most recently, Mike is the Goalie Development Coach for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Mike is a former Quebec Major Junior Hockey League goaltender with the Rimouski Oceanic and finished his playing career with four years at Acadia University.     Beyond the Ice with Charlie Bourgeois

    Centering connection in hockey and taking an inside look at what has defined success, beyond the ice. A native of Moncton, N.B., Charlie Bourgeois brings over 12 years of professional hockey experience to the Atlantic Hockey Group. His amateur career was crowned by a Canadian University Championship with Les Aigles Bleus de l’Université de Moncton (Moncton Blue Eagles). Charlie was named “All Canadian” in that championship. During his NHL career Charlie played for the Calgary Flames, St Louis Blues and Hartford Whalers.  His professional career also included playing and coaching in Europe for 3 seasons. Founded in 1989, the Atlantic Hockey Group (AHG) program has become one of the most successful in Atlantic Canada. The philosophy of the Atlantic Hockey Group is to bring together a group of highly qualified instructors in a professionally structured training environment.  AHG works with over 10,000 young male and female hockey players each year as well as having over 500 coaches involved in the different programs.
