13 episodes

Markis, Hannah, Devonte, Abigail, Jeremiah, and Sierra Hart—six beautiful black children, ranging in age from 12 to 19—were all adopted by Sarah and Jennifer Hart, both white. On Jen’s Facebook page, it looked as if they were the perfect blended family, even earning the nickname “Hart Tribe” from friends. Then, on March 26, 2018, the family’s GMC Yukon was found belly-up on the rocks below California’s Highway 1. The news of the murder-suicide shocked their friends and made national headlines, leaving many wondering what possibly led to the fatal crash. Could these lives have been saved? Broken Harts, a new podcast from Glamour and HowStuffWorks, investigates this question with more than 30 never-before-heard interviews. Cohosts and Glamour editors Justine Harman and Elisabeth Egan and reporter Lauren Smiley follow the family’s journey from South Dakota through Minnesota, Oregon, and Washington, and finally to that 100-foot cliff in California.

This story is way more than 6 children who died. I wasn’t sure how the hosts would have enough material to make 8 episodes but I was so wrong!

Broken Harts in a broken society

In an era of relentless self-promotion frequently through strategically filtered and meticulously curated social media feeds, this tragedy shines a light on several systemic flaws in society. We see how con-artists use and manipulate existing societal flaws to their own advantage, they do not create these flaws. This tragedy which ultimately cost 6 children their lives unfolded over a decade, adeptly facilitated by systemic racism and an artfully engineered social media profile. It left nearly everyone in it’s wake shocked and surprised, unable to reconcile what they had believed with what actually transpired. Broken Harts could just as easily and aptly be titled ‘Broken Society’.

Feelings, so many feelings

I’m a little late finally listening to this but .........Very well done. Thank you! I ended binging this one day and afterwards ended up laying in bed not able to sleep, replaying so much of it in my mind. All too often, the victim’s are overlooked for the sensationalism of the crime. This was thoughtful, informative and shed a light on the victim’s that they deserve. This podcast was well researched and thoughtfully put together. With today’s interest in “true crime” and the availability of information in this genre,I believe that it has had a desensitizing effect on the general listener. This podcast brings you back to what this really is. 6 beautiful lives taken way too early and what these amazing kids had had to go through in their short lives. This podcast makes it so much more real. It is thought provoking and I hope it will inspire people to recognize and realize our flawed thinking about minding your own business, and not judging other parents until you know what they are dealing with. What really is right in these situations ? It is a hard line and a definite eye opener. With the amount of people this podcast has reached, I have no doubt that the impact of this story and how it was told will positively effect the life of other children when people are wondering if they “should get involved.....or not”. There is an importance to this story being told and so many angles to think about. I will forever be changed because of it. You have done a wonderful job making it possible for us to honour these wonderful kids. I feel horrible for the biological families who were fighting for these kids. I couldn’t imagine being in that situation with my nieces and nephews.
These children will always have a place in my heart .
