This is a podcast that features the voices and stories of notable Colorado elders. We started this podcast because after years of working in politics and in various communities, we have met many amazing people across the state that have accomplished important things. We think they should be recognized, and that you would be interested in their stories.

    Episode 5: Bernie Rogoff

    Bernie Rogoff, a long time resident of Colorado, is originally from New York where as a boy he played a Robin Hood role, doing what he could to help people who were less fortunate than himself. Bernie served in the Korean war as a medic, joined the National Guard, and later helped create a successful business. Currently, Bernie serves on a number of committees: The Colfax Community Network, the United Veterans of Colorado, he’s a commissioner for Veteran’s affairs for the City of Aurora, as well as being the Executive Director of the Education Foundation of the Colorado National Guard. These roles allowed Bernie to display his compassion, generosity, and ceaseless hard work. In the Podcast, Bernie tells the story about how he met Barak Obama, and gained the funds needed for the new Veteran’s hospital. Bernie’s most important causes are children, civil rights, political action and education. Veterans have a special place in his generous heart, and he has supported many veterans and educational causes for years. Bernie is a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather who is not afraid to speak up and voice his opinions.     Episode 4: Tim Wirth

    Tim Wirth is a former US Representative (1975-1987) and US senator (1986-1992) from Colorado. He has been a lifelong champion for the environment including Cap and Trade , The Colorado Wilderness bill and The Clean Air act amendments. Another side of Senator With was in his work to sponsor and promote baseball in Colorado,, gained funding for DEN airport, and the Two Forks dam. After his legislative work, Senator Wirth remained deeply involved in politics, working on various national and local campaigns. He has also worked behind the scene on Human rights and issues of international refugees.     Episode 3: Wayne Gilbert

    Wayne Gilbert is a man of many talents- he’s a teacher, poet, dancer, actor and the kind of man that brings wisdom and compassion wherever he goes. After studying for the ministry, and deciding to take another path, Wayne taught at the Community College of Aurora for 37 years where he was an instrumental part of a department teaching teachers to be more effective in the classroom.  This group inspired decades of teachers to strive for excellence in teaching.  At the same time he also performed in local theater and volunteered with a hospice organization. In 2005, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. Since retirement he writes and performs poems about his experience to advocate and support others with the diagnosis. His three books of poems, “magmamystic” “From the Ashes” and “Sacred Chill” represent only a small part of his poetry. Wayne has facilitated poetry workshops for Parkinson support groups, as well as within the Sterling Correctional facility.  He also performs his poetry to much acclaim, often appearing with jazz musicians. He is a vocal advocate for a woman's right to choose and has delivered over 12,000 Colorado babies. We talk to him about innovations in the medical field and the current political environment for women's health and safe access to abortions in particular.     Episode One: Dr. Barbara Shannon-Bannister

    For our first interview Nancy Jackson and co-host Carolyn Boller have a conversation with Dr. Barbara Shannon-Bannister, an award winning Community leader in the Denver Metro Area. Dr. BSB was raised in New Orleans where she studied piano, violin and voice and was an activist for civil rights. Dr. BSB has a long list of accomplishments, including twenty-five years as the Chief of Community Relations for the City of Aurora. Here is a link to the Aurora Sentinel about her life's work.
