254 - AI, spy wallets & 82 million digital dollars

Welcome to the Crypto Curious podcast, brought to you by the Bamboo App. If you're new to crypto, check out our early episodes, where we break down the basics and help you get your head around the crypto world. Big week in crypto. And this time, the question is whether AI could crack the encryption protecting our crypto wallets — years before quantum computers were expected to pose a threat. An Ethereum researcher has warned the industry to prepare for “bunker mode”, and Vitalik Buterin has weighed in. So, how worried should we actually be? Then, a hardware wallet horror story. Devices sold through an official Ledger reseller allegedly had hidden spy modules inside, with around $87 million in crypto linked to the suspected attack. It's a reminder that sometimes the biggest security risk isn't the technology itself, but who you trust to supply it. And finally, a sign of just how mainstream crypto payments could become: Samsung is bringing USDC transfers to around 82 million eligible Galaxy phones in the US. No separate crypto app required. Let's get into it 🚀 **** TIMESTAMPS 2:03 The AI overlords are coming for your crypto! 5:50 Ledger hardware wallets take a reputational hit. 9:51 And a good news story - stablecoins are going mainstream 13:00 Short, sharp news bites **** Show notes: Curious about our app? 253 -💥BONUS EPISODE : He built 1inch in a weekend. What happened next?

This week, we’re joined by Sergej Kunz, co-founder of 1inch and one of the early builders in DeFi. Sergej built the first version of 1inch at a hackathon in New York over a single weekend in 2019. Before crypto, he worked as a security engineer in Germany, including at Porsche. Now he’s launched Aqua, a shared liquidity layer designed to tackle one of DeFi’s biggest problems: fragmented and underused liquidity. We talk about the weekend that started 1inch, building through multiple crypto cycles, why so much liquidity sits unused, and what Aqua is trying to change. We also get into self-custody, the growing relationship between DeFi and traditional finance, and where Sergej thinks the industry is heading next. A fascinating conversation with someone who has been building in DeFi from the very beginning. Let's get into it 🚀 **** Talking Points: → The hackathon that started 1inch → Leaving a career in security engineering for crypto → Building through multiple market cycles → Why so much DeFi liquidity sits unused → What Aqua is actually trying to change → Why self-custody matters for liquidity providers → And where Sergej thinks DeFi is heading next **** Show notes: 1inch 1inchaqua 1inch on X Curious about our app? 252 - Uptober: Banks Go Onchain, Blockchains Go Offline

This week we've got a pretty good snapshot of where crypto is heading, because while the banks are finally getting serious about blockchain, some of the blockchains that promised to change finance are discovering that staying alive is actually quite difficult. First up, SWIFT; the system that moves money between pretty much every bank on Earth, has switched on its own blockchain ledger, with 17 major banks already piloting it. And yes, there's a very familiar Australian name in that group. Then we've got Blast. A blockchain that once had more than $2.3 billion locked on it is shutting down, with users given just three weeks to get their money out. At its peak it was making millions a month. Last month it made $1,793. And finally, Tether is facing some pretty uncomfortable questions from the US Senate, with an investigation claiming USDT has become a major tool for Iran to get around sanctions. Tether, unsurprisingly, has some things to say about that. Let's get into it 🚀 **** TIMESTAMPS 1:58 Swift - the plumbing of global crypto finance - switches on its blockchain 7:09 Blast announces it's shutting down 9:22 Tether gets super uncomfy!!! 12:02 Short, sharp news bites **** Show notes: Curious about our app? 251 - The $387M Hack, Stocks on Aave & Europe's Digital Euro

Welcome back to the Crypto Curious. This week we've got 3 big stories to cover - starting with a $387 million attack on Bitget, allegedly linked to North Korean hackers — but the really interesting part might be what Bitget did next, and the crisis playbook it had ready to go. Then, your stocks just went DeFi. Coinbase's tokenized shares are now being accepted as collateral on Aave, bringing traditional assets directly into the world of decentralised lending. And finally, Europe is switching on the digital euro. The ECB has activated its first live system, with a 2029 launch target — and potentially some pretty big implications for how Europeans pay, move and hold money. So, we've got a crypto heist, Wall Street moving deeper into DeFi, and the euro getting a digital upgrade. Let's get into it 🚀 **** TIMESTAMPS 1:33 Bitget get drained $387m 5:39 Coinbase tokenized stocks are now LIVE! 8:08 When everybody looked right, the birth of the digital Euro went left... 12:26 Short, sharp news bites **** Show notes: Curious about our app? 250 - Bitcoin's $85K Breakout, The AI Scam & DeFi's Wall Street Door

Before we get into this week's stories… we need to talk about Bitcoin, because the group chats are ON FIRE. Bitcoin has smashed through $85,000, with both Bitcoin and Ethereum up around 10% this week — and technical traders are getting very excited about what that breakout could mean. But while the charts are doing their thing, Washington has been having a slightly different kind of week. The big US crypto bill failed in the Senate… and within 48 hours, the regulators basically said, "Fine, we'll do it ourselves." We've also got a new AI scam where 224 people were tricked into deploying wallet-draining smart contracts themselves — proving once again that in crypto, sometimes the biggest threat is the person holding the wallet. And finally, DeFi is building a new door for the institutions. Aave wants Wall Street to be able to borrow against Bitcoin while keeping that Bitcoin safely tucked away with a regulated custodian. Let's get into it 🚀 **** TIMESTAMPS 0:59 Blake calls it early 4:34 The Clarity Act - we are over it but... 7:44 Should we pump the AI brakes? 9:44 DeFi - how do you get into it? 12:34 Short, sharp news bites **** Show notes: Radio Labs 2-minute survey Curious about our app? 249 - The $320M Bitcoin Heist, Dorsey's Bank & LAPTOP's 98% Crash

This week in crypto we've got hackers who stole $320 million in Bitcoin… then gave most of it back and asked for a $47 million thank-you payment. Yep. Apparently even crypto criminals are negotiating their bounties now. We've also got Jack Dorsey making the ultimate establishment move — Block has applied for a US banking charter to custody Bitcoin and stablecoins. Because apparently the road to decentralisation now goes through the banking regulator. And finally, the LAPTOP update we've been waiting for. Hunter Biden's memecoin launched, briefly rocketed to a $1.6 billion implied market cap… and then crashed 98% in its first hour. And the wallet trail behind it is raising a few eyebrows. So: polite hackers, Bitcoin banks and another celebrity memecoin spectacular. Let's get into it 🚀 **** TIMESTAMPS 2:18 Hackers stole $320m then asked for $47m for returning it 6:05 Block has filed with the banking regulator for a banking license 8:00 Laptop flop! 10:14 Short, sharp news bites **** Show notes: 2-minute survey Curious about our app? 248 - Bitcoin, Hunter Biden & The Return of the Memecoin Casino

It's never a dull week in crypto, folks. First up, Hunter Biden is launching a memecoin called LAPTOP — aimed squarely at people who've lost money on the Trump memecoin. And the timing is pretty extraordinary, because memecoin trading is roaring back, with Robinhood Chain posting record volumes. Then, Bitcoin miners are quitting Bitcoin for AI. Some of the biggest players in the industry are shutting down mining operations and turning their power-hungry warehouses over to AI — because apparently GPUs are now a better business than Bitcoin. And finally, El Salvador's Bitcoin mystery deepens. The IMF says the country's Bitcoin stash has continued growing thanks to private donations... from donors who, so far, nobody seems willing to name. Let's get into it 🚀 **** TIMESTAMPS 3:04 Sleepy Joe's son is launching a memecoin called LAPTOP 8:09 Hyperscale Data is quitting Bitcoin for AI 11:27 El Salvador mystery deepens 14:14 Short, sharp news bites **** Show notes: 2-minute survey Curious about our app? 247 - From Bitcoin to Goat Insurance With Peter Stanhope of Nexo

This week, we've got a very special guest joining us for this week's crypto news — Peter Stanhope, General Manager Australia at Nexo. Peter has spent almost a decade at IG Australia, co-founded superannuation startup GigSuper, ran Capital.com's Australian operations, jumped the fence into crypto with Banxa, and now heads up Nexo here in Australia — just as they've launched regulated crypto-backed credit lines Down Under. Welcome, Peter! So what have we got for you this week? First up, we're going inside Nexo with Peter to find out how a crypto platform went from a 2018 startup to more than 7 million customers — and what regulated crypto-backed lending actually looks like for Australians. Then, California has had enough of politician memecoins. Its legislature has unanimously voted to ban public officials from launching their own coins — because apparently this is a problem we now need laws for. And finally, we've got 4,000 goats, an insane wage law and a prediction market. A California goat-herding company has literally hedged the risk of a $240,000 wage bill by betting on whether the government will fix the law. Let's get into it. 🚀 **** TIMESTAMPS 1:28 Nexo's story 10:48 California bans memecoins from politicians 14:00 Goat herders make a stand on Kalshi 18;20 Short, sharp news bites **** Show notes: Nexo | Linkedin | X 2-minute survey Curious about our app?
