    In today’s episode we have John Adekat and Pearl Habitant, both are elders and are here today to talk a bit about their family history. They also talk about some of the traditional ways they still practiced, such as trapping and hunting, tanning hides and making dry meat from moose. Both are always willing to teach the younger generation the knowledge that was passed on to them.     Hello and welcome back, today I visited Mary Francis and sat down with her to discuss her life and how she used to go to rocky lane school to teach kids beaver in an after-school program. She also talked about how to tan a moose hide. I also stopped by Louie Atchooay (Mary’s brother) place for a quick coffee and asked him about a few words in beaver and moose population. On my way home I stopped by Mary’s again to get a few more stories of our community’s history. We then got into a car and drove around the child lake reserve; the place Eddie calls home while he explains some more things in beaver.     Today we interviewed Albina Kazonay and halfway thru we had a visitor stop by, Mary Francis. Both shared a few words in beaver along with some history of themselves and some of the history of our community. We are in the kitchen today and we were making a moose stew while we chatted about the way things used to be, come along for the journey with us. Recipe for stew 3 carrots (peeled and chopped) 2 onions (diced) 4 stocks of celery (chopped) 1 turnip (peeled and chopped) 1 can of corn 4 potatoes (peeled and copped) 8 cups of beef broth A pinch of dried oregano, parsley, and sage 1.5 pounds of moose meat (cut into bitesize pieces) Salt and pepper to taste Add a tablespoon flour to thicken stew for gluten free add a teaspoon cornstarch instead Brown meat in big stock pot, once browned remove and set aside. Turn up heat and add onions and continue to mix until onions caramelize(turn light brown) Add beef broth, carrots, potatoes, oregano, parsley, sage, and moose. Bring everything to a boil For quick meal, once at boil add in flour or cornstarch, celery, corn, turnip and salt and pepper (add water if needed). Continue to cook until all vegetables are soft. Then serve For more tender meat, add moose to pot before vegetables and cook on low for 6 hours or even overnight, 45min to 1 hour before serving add all vegetables in and cook on med – high until vegetables are soft then serve

    To start us off we have a special guest today, Eddie Pierrot. He is 67 years young and has spent years keeping the beaver language alive and teaching other members of the nation. Today I would like you to use your imagination and picture you are sitting around the picnic table with other members listing to and elder as they teach you a bit of the beaver language, we will cover simple words and the names of local places like Eleske.     Dane-zaa Journey Introduction

    Are you looking to learn about beaver language? Join Taylor Hirt as we listen to elders speak about the beaver language and listen to their life story. In this podcast we discussed what Beaver First Nation has done to help beaver language restoration, what Is the value in retaining this knowledge. Where chief and council see our nation going if no steps are taken to restore the language in the next 10 years. What chief and council’s goals are for the next five years, and a few members shared a word in beaver for our listeners to learn. Fallowing this we will be interviewing elders around beaver first nation who still speak beaver, for a weekly podcast.  I interviewed Gary Kipling and clarence Fournier on December 13, 2022, and Henry Francis on December 19, 2022.
