Acts 19: A Suprising Cost of Discipleship

What do occult books, expensive possessions, and following Jesus have in common? In Acts 19, the new believers in Ephesus did something that seems almost unbelievable. They publicly burned their occult scrolls, even though they were worth a fortune. Why? Because they realized that following Jesus required a clean break with their old way of life. Here we explore one of the most powerful principles in the book of Acts: A clean break establishes a solid foundation for the gospel. We'll look at: -Why the Ephesian believers destroyed their occult practices. -Why obedience often looks impractical. -The difference between legalism and genuine holiness. -Why some Christians never seem to mature in their faith. -How hidden compromise weakens our witness and our spiritual growth. -Practical questions to help you examine your own life. Following Jesus isn't about adding Him to our existing lifestyle. Sometimes it means decisively leaving things behind so we can wholeheartedly follow Him. The Subversive Name of Jesus

Why did Paul cast a demon out of a girl who seemed to be telling the truth? Acts 16 contains one of the most dramatic stories in the New Testament, but there's much more happening than most people notice. A spirit attempts to associate itself with Paul's ministry. Paul rejects that connection, demonstrating that truth mixed with deception is still deception. The result? A slave girl is set free. Paul and Silas are beaten and imprisoned. Yet the real theme of the chapter isn't prison. It's freedom. In this study of Acts 16, we explore: Why Paul rejected the spirit's endorsement. The surprising background of the "spirit of divination."Why the Gospel often creates opposition when it sets people free. What true freedom looks like, even in difficult circumstances. Why the Philippian jailer asked, "What must I do to be saved?"How the name of Jesus still brings freedom today. The challenge from this passage is simple: Receive freedom in Jesus' name. Extend freedom in Jesus' name. Whether you need freedom from fear, guilt, spiritual bondage, despair, or hopelessness, or whether God is calling you to bring the hope of Christ to someone else, Acts 16 reminds us that Jesus still changes lives. New Believer Follow-Up

They’ve repented of their sins. They’re trusting in Jesus. They’re beginning to follow him. Now what? When someone responds to the gospel, that is not the finish line. It is the beginning of discipleship. Jesus did not command us merely to make converts. He commanded us to make disciples. In this episode we look at four simple pillars for following up with a new believer: Bible. Prayer. Fellowship. Mission. These four words give you a basic framework for helping a new follower of Jesus get anchored in the faith, begin obeying the Word, learn to pray, connect with other believers, and start living on mission. We also talk about why baptism matters, where a new believer might begin reading the Bible, how the Lord’s Prayer can help someone learn to pray, why real fellowship is essential, and why mission should be part of discipleship right from the beginning. If you have a friend who has recently come to faith, or if you want a simple framework for helping others follow Jesus, this will help. You Shared the Gospel With a Friend. Now What?

Sharing the Gospel isn't easy. There are moments of resistance along the way: asking someone if you can pray for them, sharing your own story, explaining the good news of Jesus, and then, perhaps hardest of all, calling for a response. In this episode, I walk through a simple, practical way to help a friend respond after you have shared the Gospel with them. We look at questions like: What do you say after explaining the Gospel? How do you ask if someone wants to receive God’s forgiveness and follow Jesus? How do repentance, faith, prayer, and baptism fit together? What should you do if your friend says no?What should you do if they say yes?The goal is not to pressure people into a shallow decision. The goal is to lovingly and clearly invite them to respond to Jesus with repentance, faith, and a willingness to follow him as his disciple. If you have someone in your life who needs Jesus, and you know it may be time to have that Gospel conversation, this episode will help you take the next step with wisdom and courage. Living on Mission While Exhausted

What do you do when living on mission feels exhausting? A comment in one of our small groups sparked this episode: “Living on mission is tiring.” And honestly, many followers of Jesus quietly feel that way. When life is busy, stressful, and draining, it can feel impossible to constantly think about evangelism, disciple making, or “doing ministry.” Sometimes you are not thriving. You are just surviving. There is a healthier and more biblical understanding of what it means to live on mission. Living on mission is not nonstop activity, pressure, or trying to produce impressive visible results for God. It is about faithfulness. It is about following Jesus consistently in every area of life. Yes, mission includes evangelism and disciple making. But it also includes: how you treat people how you handle money how you lead your family how you serve how you pray how you live when nobody is watching A huge part of disciple making is modeling a faithful life over time. If you are tired, discouraged, or feeling like you are falling short, this will help reframe what faithful mission really looks like. The Love That Actually Lasts in Marriage

Everyone wants a love that lasts. A love that is patient, kind, steady, and unbreakable. The kind of love described in 1 Corinthians is often read at weddings, but rarely understood in its full weight. In this podcast we unpack the reality behind that kind of love and the two catches most people miss: * This love is a package deal. You do not get to pick and choose the parts you like. * This love is not natural. It is supernatural. We also connect this to the “fruit of the Spirit” in Galatians and explore why both passages point to the same truth: the love that actually lasts in marriage is not something you produce. It is something God produces in you. If you want a marriage marked by real love, not just feelings or effort, this will reframe how you think about love, faith, and following Jesus. Key topics: * What biblical love really is * Why most marriages struggle to sustain it * The difference between natural love and agape love * How lasting love is formed in a person and a relationship * The role of Jesus in transforming how we love If you have questions about what it means to follow Jesus or want to go deeper, check the links below. https://www.twelvechurch.net/who-is-jesus Learn more at 12Church.net Take the Personal Evangelism Crash Course Here: https://www.twelvechurch.net/evangelism-crash-course Discover the Missional Living Map: https://missionalmap.com Learn more about 12Church: https://12church.net Get access to any tools and resources mentioned in this video here: https://www.12church.net/tools The 8 Essential Traits of a Disciple: https://www.twelvechurch.net/dna https://12church.net is about structuring your life around the call to be a disciple of Jesus Christ who makes disciples.  It's about learning HOW to make disciples in this time and place.

Breaking the Mental Barriers That Kill Disciple-Making

Why aren’t more Christians actually making disciples? It’s easy to blame culture, busyness, or even the church. But the biggest barriers to living on mission aren’t “out there”… they’re internal. In this podcast we break down 7 mental barriers that quietly shut down disciple-making—and how to push through them. You’ll discover: * Why some Christians never step into mission at all * How lack of surrender (Romans 12) blocks obedience * The truth about the Great Commission (Matthew 28) * Why many believers feel stuck and don’t know how to start * The hidden mindset that keeps ministry “professionalized” * How the wrong model of church limits real impact This isn’t about guilt or pressure. It’s about clarity—and stepping into what Jesus actually called us to. If you’re serious about following Jesus, this matters.
