Episode 15: The Primary Care Healthcare Shift with Brianna Boutin, NP

This episode discusses the current shift happening in healthcare, so that you can make more informed decisions about choosing the best provider for your personal health needs. The current state of the American healthcare system is broken. We’re currently working with a system where 65% of all healthcare dollars are spent on the sickest 10% of the population. Let me say that again… 65% of the health insurance premiums and Medicare taxes you pay every month, go towards healthcare spending for the sickest 10% of Americans. Those insurance premiums and deductibles continue to increase at unprecedented rates, yet what healthcare providers get reimbursed by insurance companies continues to decrease. This is resulting in unrealistic productivity standards for healthcare providers, requiring them to see more and more patients in less and less time… which inevitably causes a decrease in the quality of care the other 90% of the non-sickest Americans receive, as well as an extremely high rate of burnout for healthcare providers. For these reasons an increasing number of providers have sought a better method of delivering a higher quality, more personable, and overall better healthcare experience for both the patient and the provider. This movement for primary care providers has been referred to as Direct Primary Care. My next guest is a nurse practitioner who has recently opened her own direct primary care office in an attempt to deliver healthcare services the way she feels is in the best interest of her patients and herself as a provider. Episode 12: Simplifying Fitness to 100 Words with Hunter Wood

Every so often, we read or hear something that really strikes a chord within us. A moving speech from someone clearly passionate about a topic, or a saying that hits us at the right time we needed to hear it and sticks with us. For me, one of those came from the founder of CrossFit Greg Glassman’s “World Class Fitness in 100 Words”. Throughout the quote, he seamlessly moves from the base of CrossFit’s theoretical hierarchy of development (nutrition) through the top of the pyramid (sport). He discusses the 3 main categories of movements as defined by CrossFit (monostructural, gymnastics, and weightlifting), along with other key concepts in CrossFit methodology like variability, mastering mechanics, intensity, and training-to-rest days. There is a saying that “beginners complicate, and experts simplify”. The ability to sum up all of these concepts, in the purposeful flow as Glassman does in 100 words is nothing short of expert and masterful. But at the same time, it is helpful to unwrap these concise statements and expand on the concepts to better understand and incorporate these ideas into our daily lives. My next guest did exactly that for the members of his gym. Through an email series of 4-5 emails, he unpacked the 100 words into an in-depth discussion on the significance of Greg Glassman’s statements, and how to incorporate them. I invited him onto the podcast to discuss some of those same points. Episode 11: Performance Technologies with Josh Segal of Hawkin Dynamics

In this episode we discuss some of the technologies revolutionizing human performance and physical therapy. We took a little break during the busy summer here in Maine, but we’re back now with a brand new episode for you. If you remember back to episode one, we discussed how fitness should be measurable, observable, and repeatable. The same holds true for health and wellness metrics, or during a patient’s journey though physical therapy. It is important to collect meaningful data that can be tracked reliably for many reasons, including: - Being able to show a patient their progress through objective data. This progress can be small and incremental, and sensitive measurement can display these improvements. - Making informed decisions about plan of care. If something isn’t measured, or if isn’t measured accurately, it likely won’t be properly addressed. - Ability to measure the unseeable. There are many things that today’s technologies can pick up, that we can’t see with the naked eye, giving us more insight to better manage an athlete’s treatment or load management. There is a company based right here in the greater Portland area that creates these technologies. Hawkin Dynamics in Westbrook makes world class force plates and dynamometers, allowing clinicians and fitness professionals the ability to precisely measure numerous metrics to assist in health and fitness decision making. I sat down with one of their employees to fund out more about their products, and how they can be incorporated into the clinic and gym.
