    S2E22 — Learning Mandarin, One Real-Life Moment at a Time 用生活學語言：每天一點點的中文時刻

    In this episode, Annie and Lilah chat with an online Mandarin teacher from Taiwan who’s anything but traditional—and that’s exactly why we love her. Instead of textbooks and drills, she teaches Mandarin through real life: filming short reels about everyday moments like going to 7-11, heading out for a run, or hilariously unpacking all the very emotional Mandarin expressions that involve eggs. Her teaching philosophy is simple and powerful: language is something you live, not something you memorize. She’s a seasoned traveler who has spent time in the US, Australia, and Belgium on working holiday visas. She speaks Mandarin and Taiwanese, has fluent, conversational English, and is currently learning French—because her partner is Belgian. These experiences deeply shape how she understands language learning, culture shock, and what learners really need. Now living in a laid-back beach town in northern Taiwan, she brings warmth, curiosity, and a lot of joy into the way she talks about languages and life. This episode is a reminder that good language learning doesn’t have to feel heavy or intimidating—it can be playful, practical, and deeply human. If you’ve ever wished learning a language felt more like hanging out with a friend than sitting in a classroom, this one’s for you. By the way, the adjective that can roughly describe the taste of persimmon is “astringent.” However, even this word is not exactly accurate because it’s not used to describe a taste. This is why we say there are words and concepts in each language that cannot be translated into another language.
