    The Rest Is Just Noise

    (Disclaimer: Strong language and adult content) “If you want to be happy, learn to take nothing personally. Set boundaries and focus on yourself. The rest is just noise.” That thought kicks off this episode—and then, in true Frankie & Jess fashion, things go just about everywhere. Would you proudly rock a hickey from your spouse after 17 years of marriage, or are hickeys something we should leave in high school? What happens when you wake up to a BAT trying to crawl into your mouth? And how exactly does a black bear figure out how to open a window and let itself into someone’s house? We also get into open marriages, fights at weddings, who belongs on our personal Mount Rushmore, the things we think are actually worth spending money on—and the parents dropping $20,000 to decorate their kid’s college dorm room. That last one sends Frankie back to his early radio days, leaving Detroit for Fort Myers with almost nothing, working multiple jobs, living on peanut butter and jelly, calling home collect and doing whatever it took to make it work. Looking back, he realizes he was struggling. At the time? It was simply life. Which raises a bigger question: Are we helping our kids by making their lives easier—or are we taking away some of the struggle that teaches them who they are? And in the middle of all the laughs, the show gets unexpectedly real when Jess gets a phone call from her mom about her almost 97-year-old grandfather. It’s a reminder that none of us knows how much sand is left in the hourglass. Maybe that’s why some things are worth the money. The trip. The experience. The time with your family.     Phil’s My Pharmacist: From Behind the Pharmacy Counter to Millions of Followers

    (Disclaimer: Strong language and adult content) Phil Cowley — better known as @philsmypharmacist — is back, and a LOT has changed since the last time we talked. Phil built a massive social media following by doing something deceptively simple: making health information useful, understandable and entertaining. But this conversation goes well beyond health hacks. We talk about the business behind becoming a full-time creator, brand deals, affiliate marketing and the importance of protecting the trust you’ve built with your audience. Phil explains why he believes creators can burn through their “creator equity” when every post starts feeling like a sales pitch — and why sometimes he’ll recommend a product one day and show you a cheap solution from the dollar store the next. We also get into what it’s like being recognized everywhere he goes, including a great story involving Henry Winkler, and why Phil has developed such an appreciation for people who overcome their own hesitation to walk up and tell him his content has helped them.     Your Life Needs More Side Quests

    (Disclaimer: Strong language and adult content) Who decided there was only one way to do life? We start this episode with a conversation about having kids—and the difference between choosing to become a parent and simply doing it because it feels like the next box society expects you to check. Marriage and kids can absolutely be wins, but so can traveling, trying something new, building relationships, learning something you’re terrible at or simply waking up and appreciating the people you still have around you. Which leads us to the idea that maybe our lives need more “side quests.” Explore somewhere in your own city you’ve never been. Walk into a random bookstore. Watch a sunset without taking a picture. Call somebody you haven’t talked to in months. Compliment a stranger. Say yes to something you’d normally turn down. Sometimes the little experiences we treat as insignificant end up being the stuff that makes life interesting. Of course, we take plenty of our own side quests during this episode—including the shows we’re watching, what movies are appropriate to watch with your kids, angel numbers, a 24-year-old Chihuahua, the world’s oldest people, a guy dressed as the Grim Reaper staring down at hospital patients, and Frankie’s confession about something he used to do to unsuspecting airline passengers while working at Detroit Metro Airport. Oh—and somehow, we end up with Jess eating cheesecake in traffic and Frankie eating an entire fish dinner while driving down I-94.     The Stories Hiding in Plain Sight: Erik Nilsson of Small Lake City

This week we catch up with Erik Nilsson, creator and host of Small Lake City, more than three years after we first appeared on his podcast. A lot has changed since then. Erik has grown Small Lake City from a podcast built around his curiosity about the people shaping Salt Lake into a local media platform with a huge social following—and he’s getting closer to making the leap into doing it full-time.     Joy and Pain Can Live in the Same House

    (Disclaimer: Strong language and adult content) This week, Jess is officially in a season she knew was coming but couldn’t really prepare for: Coop has moved out and started college. She shares what move-in day was really like—from the strange anticipation that morning and watching Coop light up around his new friends, to realizing it was time for her and Kev to leave. They’re incredibly proud and excited for him, but they’re also learning that joy and sadness can exist at exactly the same time. Jess talks about the quiet house, crying herself to sleep, resisting the urge to immediately change everything, and learning to sit with the discomfort while she and Kev figure out what this next chapter of their marriage and family looks like. It also brings a realization neither of us fully understood when we were younger: sometimes you don’t really understand what your parents went through until you eventually find yourself standing where they once stood.     Your Self-Worth Isn’t Your Productivity… Also, There’s a Fart Blaster

    (Disclaimer: Strong language and adult content) We start this episode with some surprisingly useful advice: if you know you’re heading into a difficult conversation or triggering day, could what you eat that morning actually help you handle it better? That sends us down a rabbit hole about protein, late-night snacking, sleep schedules and what happens when you finally start paying attention to what your body is telling you. Jess and Kev are about to become empty nesters, which means their midnight-to-8 sleep schedule may finally change, while Frankie shares the simple mental trick that’s helped him fall asleep faster than he has in years. But the bigger conversation is about something both Frankie and Jess have had to learn the hard way: your self-worth is not determined by how productive you are. There’s a difference between working hard and using work to avoid yourself. Sometimes taking a day off, sitting in the backyard or admitting that you’re emotionally exhausted isn’t laziness—it’s recognizing what you actually need. We also talk about what it feels like to look back at a period of your life when you kept telling everyone, “I’m fine,” only to realize later that you absolutely were not. And then, because this is the Frankie & Jess Podcast, all meaningful personal growth comes to a screeching halt.
