River Donaghey grew up in a cult. Or at least that’s what some people called it. His parents called it a “personal-growth seminar group.” Its leader called it “one big happy family.” But there was a dark side to the world River grew up in. One he never heard about as a kid. In the 1970s and 80s, a self-help company called Lifespring took America by storm. Hundreds of thousands of people walked out of Lifespring as true believers, convinced that the seminars had the power to change the world. But dozens of trainees claimed that after taking a seminar, they had a psychotic break. Some spent months in the hospital. Others attempted suicide. And at least four people died. River spent the past year digging into the bizarre, untold story of Lifespring and its controversial leader: a convicted felon turned New Age guru named John Hanley. What he uncovered made him question everything he thought he knew about his childhood. And about the seminars that are still changing lives—and ruining them—to this day.

River is such a good storyteller! I was intrigued the entire time. Great podcast for all culties!
Interesting perspective!

I thought this podcast brought a great perspective on as the creator has both been involved in the seminars, and has also taken a step back to reflect on them critically. Clearly a lot of work has gone into this!
Questionable Final Thoughts…
2023-11-13
I enjoyed this podcast up until the 5th and 6th episode. I felt like it was pretty irresponsible of the host to decide at the end that the cult(?) they grew up in was both good and bad, considering how many people died. It really made me question whether or not this host should continue to investigate cults in further seasons as they seem pretty susceptible to cult manipulation and thought patterns. This is however, a well researched and polished podcast. Great interviews and open conversations. River has a great podcast narration and the writing was captivating. Unfortunately, the ending and the final thoughts by the host left me feeling queasy and frustrated — ending on such ambiguous morality left me wondering, well, why did I listen to this?
Compelling cult journalism!

Just found this podcast and I’m quickly binging the entire series. I love all things cult psychology and complex human behaviour. The journalism and reporting is thoughtful, the stories are authentic, with various perspectives shared and it’s no surprise to hear another wellness community is closely tied to a MLM structure. Loving this series!
