    On this episode, I’m privileged to be talking to Lana Hansen a world-renowned Inuk artist and writer from Greenland. She wrote Sila: a fable about climate change, published in English in 2009 and in this podcast conversation she will tell us how proud she is that Greenland has prioritized the future of life by joining the international Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance (BOGA) to stop all oil projects. We’re in conversation with Laura Watts - a writer, and ethnographer of speculative and sustainable futures, who is currently at the Centre for Applied Ecological Thinking at the University of Copenhagen. Watts is the author of: How is the Future Imagined and Made? And How Might Landscapes and Writing at the Edge make that Future Otherwise? and Energy at the End of the World: An Orkney Islands Saga. They are both true believers in how communities can lead the way to a sustainable transition.

    On this episode, I’m pleased to be speaking with Fiona Polack associate professor of English at MUN and academic editor of Memorial University Press, she teaches Cli Fi; climate fiction, and studies the cultural significance of oil rigs, rigwrecks, and islands as well as the contemporary figurations of place-making in the offshore world and co-editor with Dr. Danine Farquharson of Cold Water Oil: Offshore Petroleum Cultures. We are joined by Sue Jane Taylor is a visual artist who grew up in the eastern highlands of Scotland attended Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, The Slade in London, and the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. She’s devoted much of her artistic life to documenting the engineering, culture, and people of the UK’s energy sector. Her most recent exhibit is Nig Cromarty Nig - about the transformation of Nig Harbour into a key place for the growing renewables sector in Scotland.

    On this episode, I’m pleased to be speaking with seabird biologist and writer Holly Hogan, author of Message in a Bottle, Ocean Dispatches from a Seabird Biologist - a finalist for Canada’s 2023 Governor General’s Literary Award for Nonfiction and winner of the 2023 BMO Winterset Award. We’re together with Dr. Sourayan Mookerjea, a sociologist from the University of Alberta who researches decolonization and the anthropocene. A co-investigator of The Just Powers Group with Dr. Sheena Wilson examining gender and the power shifts necessary for a just transition. I asked Dr. Mookerjea about his Global Infrastructures of Inequality digital storytelling project that explores the uneven development of India’s Bay of Bengal. Dr. Mookerjea is also a creative writer with a short story in Best Canadian Short Stories 2024. *And I give him full credit for inspiring the name of this podcast.

We’re in conversation with Professor Melody Jue an associate professor of English at UC Santa Barbara and the author of Wild Blue Media, Saturations and many other titles. She’s an avid diver and partakes in what she calls amphibious scholarship.     This episode features Dr. Danine Farquharson and writer Amy Donovan. Danine Farquharson teaches Irish Literature and energy humanities at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador. She’s a member of the Petrocultures Research Group as well as co-editor of Cold Water Oil: Offshore Petroleum Cultures. That collection features a work of speculative, non-fiction by Amy Donovan called Raw, Dense, and Loud: A Whales’ Perspective on Cold Water Energy. Amy is currently completing a PhD in Anthropology at McGill University where she’s researching marine science uncertainties and experimental storytelling techniques for environmental empathy. She lives on the Bay of Fundy coast. I invited them in to talk about their work together and we started with a reading from Amy Donovan's story.
