"The methadone switch in British Columbia was a disaster that led to a lot of misery and many deaths."
Garth Mullins and his team from the renowned harm reduction podcast "Crackdown" won the Canadian Hillman Prize for investigative journalism around the abrupt switch of methadone to Cherry-Flavored Methadose in British Columbia in 2014.
From advocating with different regulatory bodies in BC, to nationally with Health Canada, to class action lawsuits against the makers of Methadose, Garth, and the organizations he serves, have been fighting for safer Opioid Agonist Treatment (OAT).
Even Health Canada investigated, and their findings suggested that there are important differences between the methadone products. The CDC found Methadose was insufficient,
and yet it continues to be available.
The change is coming in Saskatchewan, but we have a chance to learn from BC and do it differently.
Join us this week and listen to Garth #takeofftheblinders around what happened in British Columbia, so that we can avoid doing the same thing in Saskatchewan.
We'll talk about what his experience was when the switch was imposed in British Columbia, how other provinces have done it differently, and what people in Saskatchewan can do to feel like they have some choice in the switch to a new methadone.
If you or a loved one will be affected by this change, or you just want to learn more about it, then you definitely won't want to miss this special public awareness event right here,
    on Hard Knox Talks.
    Buckle up.

Jail House Preacher: Addiction Recovery Interview With Ronnie Mardis

"They offered me 35 years for my drug charges. I didn’t take the plea and I have no idea what will happen."
Ronnie went from prisoner to social worker. He spoke at schools, worked with inmates, and preached at the local jail.
But in 2016 the threat of losing his children through divorce took him back out.
"I ended up getting raided by law enforcement in September 2021. At that time, I had no desire to stop using. I was mad at God. Very upset, bitter, and carrying lots of resentment. One of the requirements with my bond, the Judge had me get into a drug program. It was in AA meetings, working the steps, hearing stories of addiction, my heart started to be softened."
Join us this week and listen to Ronnie #takeofftheblinders around the realities of addiction, recovery, and what it took him to find a safer way to live.
"By all odds, I should be dead, but I have another chance of sharing the same hope I have with others. If you are reading this, it isn’t too late."

Out of Chaos Comes Beauty: Renowned Ibogaine Counsellor, Anders Beatty.

Out of Chaos Comes Beauty: Renowned Ibogaine Counsellor, Anders Beatty.

"I resented being told that I had to be called an addict for the rest of my life and had no sovereignty or autonomy. I had enough white key tags to tile a room."
Anders Beatty lived in addiction fr 25 years. He tried every modality available to no avail:
8 years ago, he found his way to a happier life through Ibogaine.
    A powerful psychedelic plant medicine.
Today he is the founder of Ibogaine Counselling Services, is a Qualified Integrative psychotherapist, a plant medicine counselor, and works with a number of ibogaine and plant medicine clinics worldwide where he specializes in pre-treatment to:
"crack the client open and prepare them for the medicine. Ibogaine breaks down all the primitive defenses that we build up and it tells us the truth. That's why pre-treatment is imperative."
    When I asked "why Ibogaine";
"Ibogaine can, certainly for people addicted to opiates, take them out of addiction, overnight. It can also allow people to start to create their own narrative of self rather than living through the narrative of others".
We're pumped for this one. Anders blew our minds and we know he's going to blow yours too.
"Addiction is essentially self-medicating against inauthenticity"
Make sure you tune in this week as we step out to the fringe in the search for a safer way, this week on Phoenix Fire.

These stories need to be heard!

This podcast addresses incredibly important topics in a way that is accessible to everyone. Dan is an excellent host and a wonderful human being with a huge heart for people with lived experience of substance use. The thing I appreciate most about this podcast is that it is built around sharing stories, and I believe personal stories have far more power than figures and statistics when it comes to driving change. Share this with your friends, family, and anyone else you think could benefit from a learning a thing or two about substance use from the true experts themselves!

It doesn’t get more real than this! Real stories from real people. So helpful and educational. In my opinion there’s no better education than lived experience. Keep up the excellent work Hard Knox Talks. You rock!!

Solid info and a variety of perspectives

If you’re looking for solid info and lived experiences about substance use coming through a variety of voices, HKT is for you. I teach a course on substance use for social work students, and I use various episodes in my course - and often hear that students have tuned in for more than just the required/recommended episodes. If that’s not a ringing endorsement, I don’t know what is!
