Who Are You Outside of Capitalism?

Sometimes it feels like all there is to do and think about is work. In Canada, our lives and identities are so tied up in our jobs that I can't help but wonder, "who are you outside of capitalism?" This episode talks about capitalism, intuition and desire. It also pulls on themes from my first zine "Oh to be A Cow Resting in the Green" where I talk about how shitty it feels to be beholden to capitalism and how to imagine a more fulfilling life. P.S. We Live in a Society

The spirit of social discourse is becoming strained and unproductive. But without civil discourse — there is no civil society. If we can’t bridge the gaps of understanding between individuals, the seams of democracy will unravel around us. What we’ve forgotten is that civil discourse is a reciprocal process. It’s not only about being heard, it’s also about listening. Living in a diverse society requires us to step outside of our experience and into that of another. To do this, we might employ a philosophical position created by John Rawls called the veil of ignorance (or the original position). The Other Kind of Social Distance: Living Alone, Together.

Living alone together describes the state of living within a community of people who are bonded more by their geographic proximity, rather than their social ties. It’s the feeling of recognizing your neighbours, but not really knowing who they are. It’s the curious sense of feeling lonely in a crowded room. It’s feeling alone – together. This podcast explores feelings of isolation in modern society and how they may stem from a combination of cultural and personal sources. Who we are is, in many ways, inseparable from the cultural context within which we exist, however, we possess the agency to make choices that deviate from cultural norms. This piece explores the interplay of structure vs. agency as it relates to the social mechanisms that paradoxically create both chaos and order in our lives. This piece is not driven by heavy research, but is instead a more casual opinion piece influenced by own unique perspective.

I'm not vegan but I have a peanut allergy so I still found the experiences very relatable. Felicia is hilarious the way she uses metaphors to paint the picture of her awkward situations. Definitely worth listening for anyone with dietary restrictions!
