From the bring of the NHL top severely addicted, homeless and 3 years behind bars.

This is the story of Brady Leavold. Originally from Port Coquitlam, Leavold spent parts of 5 season in the WHL which included playing on the same line as Dallas Stars Captain, Jamie Benn. Just two years later he found himself addicted to heroin and shortly after that he was homeless on Vancouver's downtown east side which led him into a life of crime and violence.

He was eventually arrested and spent 3 years behind bars. After becoming honest with his past and dealing with the trauma of sexual abuse, Brady has finally found his way and is one grateful man.

#31 Hockey 2 Hell And Back Ft. Graeme "Bones" Bonar

Brady is joined by former NHL prospect and OHL sniper Graeme Bonar. There was no one rock bottom for Graeme Bonar, there was a series of them. Once a highly rated prospect with the Montreal Canadiens, Bonar was a natural scorer who led the Ontario Hockey League with 66 goals for the Soo Greyhounds during the 1984-85 season. But a nasty injury derailed his chance at an NHL career before it could start. Then there was a decade of addiction to alcohol, painkillers and cocaine as he wandered from one minor pro outpost to another. After battling his own demons Bonar is now 24 years sober and helping others find their way. Join Brady Leavold when he welcomes his friend Graeme Bonar to Hockey 2 Hell And Back Ep.30 Live Wednesday February 24th, 2021 on The Mental Health Hockey Podcast Network on YouTube. “I have struggled with depression and anxiety, and I have carried that along for quite some time — I would say as far back as junior,” said the Dryden, Ont. native, now 27 and coming off a three-year run with the Belfast Giants of the Elite Ice Hockey League in the U.K. “There came a time for me where I wanted to get to the root of why I was anxious, or why I was upset, and that led me to deciding OK, I’m going to sit with somebody, to tell them how I feel and they’re going to professionally tell me why I might be feeling that way.” Once he did open up, some solutions almost seemed almost obvious: Eat better, get more sleep. Other, more weighty topics, required a lot more discussion, but he found it was worth the effort.

Great podcast!

So Intriguing!

You HAVE to listen to Brady’s story and how he can talk about all aspects of his past so courageously... It really tugs at my emotions, and I know the hockey world is so lucky to have an advocate to speak up about Mental Illness and addiction in HOCKEY (from childhood to playing at the pro-level in the NHL. At the very least, he’s bringing awareness to this sensitive & and often mislead topic. WAY TO BRADY! You’re an INSPIRATION!!!
