    Your First Game! How Exciting!

    To start this week off Bex explains the Points system in the MNHL - both game points and player points. Then Bex shares what it's like going to your first Hockey game - be it a minor league game or a professional game! It's definitely a culture shock if you've never gone before! Please forgive Bex (me) if they come off as having White Savior Complex. I did not intend for it to come off like I'm trying to be a savior, but it definitely came across that way. I recognize the racism in America and how dangerous it can be for people of color when things escalate, and as a white female presenting person, it is safer for me to escalate a situation to warrant action by the staff of the arena (especially if it ends with police being called). Black, brown, and indigenous people do not need "saving" or protection from white "saviors". They need allies who are going to stand with them. And sometimes, that includes being the loud squeaky wheel that gets the grease. This is a concept and a situation that I struggle with on a regular basis - where is the line between ally and helpful, and where does "White savior" start? So if it came across as inconsiderate, tone deaf, or anything other than "You are safe with me, I will help however I can", I apologize. That was not my intent, and I try to do my best every day to be better than I was yesterday. I love you all! 3

    Divisions Explained

    This week Ryan breaks down the divisions for the MNHL, and how the PWHL doesn't have divisions yet. There looks to be a lot, but there's not, we promise. There's 32 teams in the MNHL, and half of them are East or Western Conference. These are the two that are going to be facing off in the Stanley Cup finals. One from the East. One from the West. The Divisions are broken down into Atlantic, Metropolitan, Central, and Pacific. This is where you'll get the most rivalries between teams. Teams in the Atlantic division play each other more often than the other divisions, creating more opportunities to create friction between teams. The PWHL doesn't have this problem because they don't have as many teams. With only 6 teams their inaugural year, 8 teams last year, and 12 teams this coming year, the PWHL takes on a more league-wide approach to the Walter Cup finals.     Penalties, Penalties, and more Minor Penalties

    Because there's so many penalties in ice hockey, we are separating this into two episodes: minor penalties and major penalties. This week we are tackling minor penalties! Buckle in, because there's A LOT! Also - Bex has dyslexia and brain farts. Please forgive the "he picks up his puck" instead of "picks up his STICK". (In my defense: I work 12 hour 3rd shifts and we tend to record in the mornings after work, forgive me HAHAH)

    Anatomy of an Ice Hockey Rink

    (Note: This was recorded on May 11th) Welcome to our very first episode! We're so glad you're here! This is for the Girls, the Gays, the Theys, and all of you who want to learn about hockey but didn't think there was a space for you. Here is your space! No one can tell you where you do or don't belong. Hockey should be for everyone, so join Bex and Ryan as we break down hockey the way we wish it had been broken down for us when we got into the sport this year (2026)! This week Bex and Ryan are starting off strong with the anatomy of a hockey rink (which you can find references to on our Instagram page @IcingPucksPodcast), what icing is, and what offside means! Hockey should be accessible to everyone, even those who have never watched a sport before in their life. That's why our email and Instagram are open to all of you if you have more questions! At the end of the episode we keep repeating that if we are wrong, please correct us. We aren't trying to be annoying with that, but we are serious: We are new fans, ourselves! We just really enjoy going down these rabbit holes and immersing ourselves into this sport. We said a few things in this episode that were not correct: First: Bex stated that all arenas/rinks have the home team bench on the right hand side when you're watching the game. That was not correct. That's not a standard, every rink is different. Second: We said we thought a scrum was a fight for the puck. It's not. A scrum is another word for a fight. We make mistakes, but we will also correct ourselves when we catch it. In this case, we didn't catch it until after we had already recorded and edited the episode. Thank you for joining us!
