How many superlatives are you allowed in one review without appearing to have been paid?
No idea but Mr. Oldham’s 2nd podcast with Rob Schwartz is a terrific listen. This one has so many references and nods to so many music and literary figures that you can hardly grasp that one man experienced so much.
Episode 2 features much more Loog Oldham than Episode 1 which is why, I guess, we listen to it. The guests might be interesting but Mr. O is who we want to hear. Unlike Episode 1, the anecdotes in this podcast actually all went somewhere.
Can’t wait for #3.
Just started listening to Danny Goldberg, episode 3. Love the exchanges about compiling charts and promotion. “West Coast Promotion Man” anyone?
However, Danny is incorrect or maybe has memory fade; the wonderful Judy Clay didn’t just have one hit. She sang with William Bell on “Private Number”, an absolute classic of the late 60’s. Now back to the podcast..........
MF. Goldberg is a great guest with lots of insights and anecdotes but, as usual, the real gems are from Andrew Loog Oldham. He is able to slip-in some absolutely golden lines such as, when commenting about 70’s British blues bands, he says they “sounded original. “ Or, referring to the Underground Garage with Steven van Zant, he admitted that it was only then he “had” to start listening to the Beatles.
Love the podcast. Anyone even remotely interested in music and the culture surrounding it should listen
#4 please!!!
Listening to Podcast 4. Dave Kaufman. Bit disappointing. Not Andrew but Kaufman. I’m trying to figure out just who the podcast is aimed at. Andrew’s thoughts and recollections are presumably what listeners want to hear. I know I do. His stories and casual name drops are just fascinating. I honestly don’t want to hear an over-opinionated Montreal DJ pontificating.
Sorry. Perhaps a guest closer to Andrew’s generation and more attuned to ( and maybe familiar with ) Andrew’s history and interests would be more stimulating.
Anyway, it’s always worth listening to the podcast for Mr. Oldham’s gems.
Red Robinson
Classic. This is the podcast we’ve ( I’ve) been waiting for. Vintage ,in ever sense , Andrew Long Oldham and Red Robinson rambling and reminiscing about the artists and music that they knew and, in some cases, knew very well. Just fascinating.
Spot on as far as Roger Waters is concerned.
Absolutely priceless when Mr.Oldham confessed that if Jack Nitzsce hadn’t done “Lonely Surfer”, there wouldn’t be “Bittersweet Symphony.”
“ I was copying Jack Nitzsce.”
The complete podcast.......priceless and totally absorbing.
Thank you.
