Escaping to survive with Mohamed Semra

Hello! We’re back with another Life Lessons episode. Today, we’re joined by Mohamed Semra, the Mayor of the City of Maribynong and the first person of Sub-Saharan African descent to be elected mayor in Australia. Born in Sudan, Mohamed arrived in Australia as a refugee at the age of three with his mum, Samira, and five siblings.  In this conversation, Mohamed shares the pivotal moments that shaped his journey into leadership. From overcoming a childhood stutter with the support of a teacher and finding confidence through debating, to speaking out after a viral incident of racial profiling that ultimately led to changes in inclusion practices at Apple stores around the world. We also discuss Mohamed’s path into public service, the importance of representation, and his vision for creating positive change in the community. At just 27 years of age, Mohamed is truly only getting started.  If you’d like to support Mohamed, you can follow his Instagram page @mayor_mohamed_semra. Ruby's Nana Kay on her life lessons at 80

Hello! This Thursday, we're back with a very special Life Lessons episode. Ruby sits down with her Nana, Kay Hall! At 80 years old, Kay has lived a life marked by love, resilience, and more wisdom than we could ever fit into one conversation. In it, she shares how grief and estrangement have shown up over the decades, and the moment she had to give up her firstborn son for adoption after unexpectedly falling pregnant at 17-years-old. She also reflects on what it was like growing up as a young woman in the 1950s and 60s, from being forced to leave work after marriage, the moment she met her husband of 60 years, Keith Hall, and the heartache they went through after the loss of their second child at 40 weeks pregnant. It's a really special one. We hope you enjoy this conversation between Ruby and Kay! Lisa Wilkinson: 'I knew these women had no one else to go to'

Hello! Today, we have an extra-special Life Lessons episode with one of Australia’s most well-recognised and formidable journalists, Lisa Wilkinson. Lisa’s career in media spans over four decades: for 10 years, she co-hosted Nine’s Today Show alongside Karl Stefanovic, before becoming a regular host on Network 10's The Project, a role she held until 2022. In recent years, Lisa has faced public backlash, navigating a highly publicised court case. Today, she shares how her 3 Life Lessons and new book, The Titanic Story of Evelyn, have grounded her amid the scrutiny. She also speaks about becoming the editor of Dolly Magazine at just 21, facing heartbreak in her early thirties, the moment she feared she might never have children, and how everything changed when she met her now-husband, Peter FitzSimons. If you’d like to support Lisa, you can buy her new book The Titanic Story of Evelyn here, or at any good bookstore! This conversation touches on themes of abuse, so please listen with care.
