The Safety Map Podcast

Alyssa Decker

The Safety Map Podcast explores how the nervous system shapes healing, connection, and change. Hosted by Alyssa Decker, founder of the Safety Map framework, these conversations unpack why calm is not the same as safe, how rupture rewrites our internal map, and what becomes possible when safety increases. This is not about performance or quick fixes. It is about structural healing, grounded insight, and real-world application. If you’re ready to move beyond coping and into deeper change, you’re in the right place.

Why Unsafe Patterns Can Feel Safer Than Change

Why do we stay in patterns that hurt us? Why do we keep repeating behaviors or cycles we already know we do not want to repeat? Why does anxiety keep running even after the threat has passed? In this episode, Alyssa explores why your system may choose patterns that look unhelpful, unsafe, or self-sabotaging from the outside — not because your nervous system is trying to ruin your life, but because the alternative may feel even less survivable. Through the Safety Map lens, your body is not choosing from every objectively available option. It is choosing from the options it can currently perceive as available, possible, and likely to reduce the most immediate predicted danger. That means your system may choose unsafe connection over no connection, anxiety over vulnerability, compliance over punishment, control over uncertainty, silence over exposure, or surrendering agency because agency itself predicts threat. These patterns may cost you something. But to your system, the alternative may feel like it costs more. In this episode, you’ll learn why “just leave,” “just stop worrying,” “just set a boundary,” or “just make a better choice” often misses what the nervous system is actually predicting — and why change becomes more possible when the better option begins to feel safer to choose.
