Hockey culture is rotten at the core, and this episode shows exactly why the cover-ups, privilege, and violence, often keep repeating. In a break from tradition, we won't be talking about our Montreal Canadiens. In this pod, we break down the issues, we touch on the 2018 World Junior Team Canada, the controversy that is Oilers' hiring of Stan Bowman, Mike Babcock and the signing of Alex Formenton, and why "due diligence" and "process" sound a lot less convincing when no one will actually explain what they mean.We connect the dots between hockey, fraternity culture, and the Cornell incident, exposing the same hierarchy, secrecy, and bystander silence that let abuse stay hidden. We dig into Rick Westhead's "We Breed Lions", the documentary "Code of Misconduct", and more importantly, a 2023 University of Brandon study that identifies six toxic themes in hockey culture, including commodification of players, fear-based obedience, alcoholism and drug use, sexism, homophobia, violence, and racism. The conversation also unpacks the slush fund Hockey Canada used to make assaults (S.A.) disappear, the disturbing logic behind keeping accused players in the system, and why "he's got a promising career ahead of him" is a fantasy that always centers the abuser instead of the victim. We then widen the lens beyond hockey, comparing the culture to other institutions that protect their own, from universities and youth groups to politics and the broader fascist mindset that thrives on ignorance, hierarchy, and entitlement. Along the way, we examine the role of white privilege, the cowardice of sports media, and the way fans are asked to swallow moral rot in the name of winning.Essential listening if you care about sports, accountability, misogyny, power, and the systems that keep excusing abuse as tradition.#hockeyculture #nhl #hockeycanada #cornell7#rickwesthead#webreedlions#codeofmisconduct#habs #anotherpatheticpodcast#canadiensmtl #oilers #blackhawks #alexformenton#carterhart#epsteinclass#fascism
