Jean-Paul Sartre
Jean-Paul Sartre (1905–1980) was a French philosopher, playwright, novelist, political activist, biographer, and literary critic. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century and the leading figure in French existentialism. His work has also had a significant impact on phenomenology, Marxism, and the philosophy of language. Sartre was born in Paris to a family of modest means. He lost his father at a young age and was raised by his mother and maternal grandparents. He showed early promise in philosophy and was accepted to the prestigious École Normale Supérieure in Paris, where he met and formed a lifelong relationship with Simone de Beauvoir, who would become a renowned philosopher and feminist. His seminal philosophical work "Being and Nothingness" (L'Être et le néant, 1943) established him as a leading existentialist thinker. In it, Sartre developed the concept of existentialist themes such as being-for-itself, being-in-itself, and the idea that existence precedes essence, meaning that humans must create their own meaning and values through their conscious choices and actions, rather than inheriting them from existing social or religious norms. Aside from his philosophical treatises, Sartre also made significant contributions to literature. His novel "Nausea" (La Nausée, 1938) and his play "No Exit" (Huis Clos, 1944) are widely read and have become integral parts of the existentialist movement, conveying his philosophical ideas in accessible and artistic forms. A politically engaged intellectual, Sartre took public stances on various issues, including the Algerian War and the Vietnam War. He was a vocal advocate for socialism and individual freedom and rejected the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1964, stating that a writer should not become an institution. Sartre’s contributions were not confined to his writings; his life itself was a statement of the existential freedom and responsibility he so passionately articulated in his works. His philosophy centered on human freedom, choice, and the importance of individual responsibility, making his thoughts as relevant today as they were during his lifetime.
