Legends Podcast #673; Rebel Moon - Part 2: The Scargiver (2024)

We're heading back to Rebel Moon for Part 2! After Part One - A Child of Fire lit up Netflix screens in December of last year, we had to wait four months for the second half of Zack Snyder’s Seven Samurai in Space. Now, it’s here, and it is indeed a movie that we have seen. But was it worth the wait or was it better off left to our imagination? And how does it compare to that other Part 2 of a sci-fi epic that we got this year, Dune? We’re heading to the Netlix app and clicking “play” on Rebel Moon: Part 2 - The Scargiver to find out!

Legends Podcast #671; Road House (1989)

Legends Podcast #671; Road House (1989)

*** Sorry for this being released again, and out of order. The original got deleted somehow... sorry again***
Patrick Swayze’s career hit its peak in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, cementing his status as a Hollywood hearthrob. In the span of five years from 1987 to 1991, he starred in megahits Dirty Dancing, Ghost, Point Break, and this 1989 movie about a bouncer hired to clean up a rowdy honkytonk. Co-starring Kelly Lynch, Sam Elliot, Ben Gazzara and Kevin Tighe, the film was an instant Eighties classic despite not lighting up the box office and earning mostly-negative reviews at time of release. Roger Ebert wrote, “This is not a good movie. But viewed in the right frame of mind, it is not a boring one, either.” While it only grossed about $60 million at the box office, estimates on VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray sales and cable/streaming licenses total north of $200 million. The film also earned a remake this year - which we’ll be talking about next week! We’re pulling up to the bar - and breaking it - with Road House!

Legends Podcast #672; Road House (2024)

Legends Podcast #672; Road House (2024)

We're on the road (house) again with the remake! Swapping the Kansas City suburbs for the Florida Keys, this Amazon MGM release - exclusively on the Prime Video streaming platform - trades Patrick Swayze for Jake Gyllenhaal as the man named Dalton who gets hired to clean up a rowdy bar. Produced once again by Joel Silver, this time around The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman is behind the camera, while Daniela Melchoir, Jessica Williams, Billy Magnussen, and Conor McGregor round out the cast. Amazon claims the remake has been seen by over 50 million worldwide viewers on the service over its first two weekends, making it the studio's “most-watched produced film debut ever on a worldwide basis.” But is this Road House a tired retread or does it hold the keys to a new franchise?

Legends Podcast #670; Hudson Hawk (1991)

Legends Podcast #670; Hudson Hawk (1991)

Bruce Willis was at the height of his career in the early ‘90s, with Die Hard and Die Hard 2: Die Harder securing his spot in the action movie pantheon. However, a 1991 release threatened to derail this trajectory. The flop in question concerns a recently-paroled cat burglar who is swept up in an international conspiracy to steal the pieces of a gold-producing alchemy machine invented by Leonardo Da Vinci, a plot involving the mob, the CIA, two psychotic yuppies, and the Vatican! And Willis himself helped come up with the story! The film, chock full of absurdist humor, was marketed as an action flick on Willis’s Die Hard reputation, but audiences - and critics - weren’t having it. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone said, “A movie this unspeakably awful can make an audience a little crazy. You want to throw things, yell at the actors, beg them to stop.” Despite earning a Razzie for Worst Film of the Year, the caper has attained something of a cult status based on frequent cable re-airings. Now we’re feeling the wind beneath our wings to talk about Hudson Hawk!

This 2022 film, from the directing duo known as Daniels - Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert - tells the story of a middle-age laundromat owner who taps into the multiverse in order to repair her relationships with her family. Legends Podcast #668; Chinatown (1974)

    Legends Podcast #668; Chinatown (1974)

In 1974, Roman Polanski (now a fugitive, convicted sex criminal) directed a script from Robert Towne for a film produced by Robert Evans. Set against the backdrop of Los Angeles in the 1930s, this neo-noir mystery explores wealth, power, and water in a city that is always thirsty for more of all three. Starring Jack Nicholson as private detective J.J. “Jake” Gittes, the film also features Faye Dunaway, John Huston, and Diane Ladd. Nominated for 11 Academy Awards, it won Best Screenplay and is widely considered one of the best films ever made, with the The Guardian naming it Number One in 2010. Now, fifty years since its release - and over a decade since Lobster talked about it on his first-ever movie podcast - we realize we just can’t forget about Chinatown.

Hey wing and crew. Love the cast. Can't wait to get caught up. I am way back at DOA. Love the format. The random ranting. Much better than a total structured format. Keep it up.
