Rum Daddy’s birthday pick pic is none other than Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder’s classic 1974 send-up of the movie versions of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s classic novel. Starring Wilder, Marty Feldman, Teri Garr, Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman, and Peter Boyle as The Monster, the spoof centers on a modern descendant of the infamous Dr. Victor Frankenstein, a Dr. Frederick Frankensteen, who inherits his grandfather’s estate and title and decides to take up the family business. Curiously missing from streaming nowadays, the film was a major hit when it debuted and is ranked among the best comedies of all time. Now we’re ready to bring our movie reviews back to life with Young Frankenstein! Walk this way!

This week we’re hitting the back half of Season 2 with the episodes “Players Only,” “The Man Advantage,” and “Accountability.” The Bulldogs are on their way to a perfect season with only two games remaining, but with distractions all around, will they be able to focus up and become the best team in the league, ever? First Shoresy has to help the Jims find a fourth man for their trivia team, then help Frankie keep his head in the game after being dumped (again), then deal with the debt the team owes to the Policetti brothers, and then deal with the NOSHO commissioners after getting suspended. Shoresy has his work cut out for him, but there’s something real shiny waiting for him at the end of it. Sixty hard miles to go! Let’s run ‘em up and fill ‘em in!

This week we’re talking about the first three episodes of season 2: “Get ‘Em Focused,” “Skill vs. Will,” and “Set the Tone.” The Bulldogs have played a perfect season, but success has led to distractions off the ice. Simply put, the boys are wearing themselves out with the ladies. Shoresy must work even harder to keep the team at the top, but the Jims aren’t themselves and Michaels is acting weird. But then again, goalies are always weird. Things take a turn when the American expansion team, the Soo Hunt, show up in town. Can the Bulldogs stay on top, or will it all come crashing down?

In 1977, director George Roy Hill re-teamed with actor Paul Newman - the pair had previously collaborated on Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting, two of the biggest movies of the past decade - for an oddball sports comedy about a little-known sport: ice hockey. Written by Nancy Dowd and inspired by her brother Ned’s time playing for the minor-league Johnstown Jets of the oft-flooded steeltown Johnstown, Pennsylvania, the film was originally envisioned as a documentary before Hill pitched it as a comedy. To make the film many real-life players took on roles, including Ned as the dreaded “Ogie” Ogilthorpe. While the film didn’t take home the Cup at the box office, it has gone on to be widely regarded as one of the best sports movies of all time. Now we’re hitting the ice for Slap Shot!

Following the release of The Matrix in 1999, Hollywood saw an explosion of martial arts-focused action movies. Riding that wave was Chinese actor Jet Li, who made his first American-made film debut in Lethal Weapon 4 and went on to star in Kiss of the Dragon, Romeo Must Die and this dimension-hopping cop movie. Starring as both the hero and villain - the last two variants who have absorbed the energy from their murdered counterparts - Li faces off against himself with Jason Statham, Delroy Lindo, and Carla Gugino rounding out the cast. The film also tapped into a modern rock sound with Disturbed, Drowning Pool, Godsmack, and Papa Roach. Directed by James Wong and co-written by Wong with Glen Morgan, the film was neither a box office nor critical hit. While it may be the best of the Matrix variants in this universe, in the end there can be only The One!

Nothing says summer like a road trip movie, so we're setting off for California in this 1986 cult thriller. Things get interesting in West Texas when a young man picks up a mysterious hitchhiker who turns out to be an insane serial killer. Starring Rutger Hauer, C. Thomas Howell, and Jennifer Jason Leigh, this flick has more twists than a mountain road, but it lacked one thing when it premiered: an audience. Yes, it grossed even less than its $7.9 million dollar budget, but yet somehow it earned a sequel in 2003 and a remake in 2007. While both Siskel and Ebert gave this ride a “thumbs down,” director Christopher Nolan has called it one of his guilty pleasures. But is this movie more road war or road bore? We're sticking out our thumbs in hopes of catching a lift with The Hitcher!
