The Sowden House… Echoes Of Black Dahlia

The Sowden House in Los Angeles is an architectural landmark, but it has become infamous due to its alleged connection to the unsolved 1947 murder of Elizabeth short, a.k.a. the “Black Dahlia.” From 1945 to 1950, the house was owned by Dr. George Hodel, a prominent physician who was a prime suspect in the case. Hodel’s son, retired LAPD detective Steve Hodel, has argued in his book, Black Dahlia Avenger, that his father murdered and dismembered Elizabeth Short in the basement of the Sowden House. While George Hodel was never charged with the murder, and the connection remains speculative and controversial, the theory has been fueled by police surveillance tapes from 1950 where Hodel, having his house bugged, was recorded making incriminating statements. The gruesome nature of the crime and the eerie, Mayan Revival-style architecture of the house have led many to believe that it is haunted by the tormented spirit of Elizabeth Short. Although no excavations have been performed to search for remains, the house has been the subject of numerous paranormal investigations and remains a chilling monument to one of America’s most enduring true crime mysteries. The Sowden house holds its secrets tightly, and perhaps the ghostly apparitions are just glimpses into those unresolved horrors.
