    Elizabeth Perry

    Elizabeth Perry, the Henry Rosovsky Professor of Government and Director of the Harvard-Yenching Institute, is a leading academic delving into the history of the Chinese revolution and its enduring impact on contemporary Chinese politics. Born in Shanghai before the Cultural Revolution, Professor Perry is the daughter of missionaries who taught at the renowned St. John's University, one of China's foremost Christian-American universities prior to the Cultural Revolution. During the 50s and 60s, she spent her formative years in Tokyo, experiencing the aftermath of World War II and cultivating a profound understanding of East Asian history and culture. In 1979, Professor Perry joined the first cohort of American scholars allowed to return to China, marking a significant milestone in her academic career. Our conversation with her covers a wide array of topics, including the origins of Harvard's relationship with China, strategies to foster bilateral educational exchange between the United States and China, and whether Harvard should launch a satellite campus in China.     Sugata Bose

    Sugata Bose, the Gardiner Professor of Oceanic History and Affairs at Harvard University, is a distinguished academic and politician. He has an illustrious academic career, having previously served as Director of Graduate Studies in the History Department and founding director of the Harvard South Asia Institute. Professor Bose is renowned for his research and lectures on modern South Asia, and is the only individual across all of Harvard who specializes in this area. In addition to his academic pursuits, Professor Bose has also made a significant impact in the political arena. In 2014, he won election to Indian Parliament and served as a Member of Parliament for five years.
