CJ is great on and off the court

Really enjoying this podcast! I listen to a lot of basketball podcasts and this is one of my favourites! But...did I miss and episode??? CJ did not discuss the NBA finals champions for 2019 Toronto Raptors! I know you love visiting Toronto, but I was also looking forward to your analysis and was sad when it didn’t happen......

Two legends on one pod. Can’t get any better than this. The mid-range king and the realest in the league. Much love to Jordan too, he’s hilarious!

I recently listened to 2 episodes of Pull Up with CJ McCollum. A former journalism major at Lehigh University, CJ McCollum is an NBA personality and Portland Trailblazer who has made his way to basketball media. He co-hosts the show with Jordan Schultz, who is an NBA insider for Yahoo Sports and has reported for Bleacher Report and HuffPost.

Running once a week since April 4th, 2018, Pull Up with CJ McCollum is a refreshing, charismatic podcast that involves guests inside and outside of the NBA. The podcast is a collection of give and take between the co-hosts and their guests. The hosts are thorough in their conversations, giving out opinions and questions so that segments aren’t repeated. NBA guest-athletes such as Kevin Love and Kevin Durant have returned for second interviews.

The podcast sheds light on numerous ideas. Often Schultz asks McCollum questions, however if there is a guest, both of the hosts will direct their questions towards them. Episode 80 of the podcast called “FIBA World Cup, Bobby Wagner,” released September 4th, 2019, starts off with the hosts discussing McCollum’s recent trip to Greece and the basketball World Cup in China. Later, they bring in NFL Pro-Bowl legend Bobby Wagner. The hosts immediately help Wagner get comfortable by talking about his life as an NFL player and how he lives outside of the league. Branching from those questions, they probed about his upbringing and high school basketball career. The episode had an organic flow of conversation that kept the listener engaged.

In episode 81 called “USA/FIBA Elimination, Ninja Headwear, Cleveland Browns,” McCollum and Schultz discussed topics surrounding the FIBA tournament, NBA bans on ninja headwear, and the Cleveland Browns. McCollum is a Browns fan and Schultz is a Jets fan, so they keep the show lighthearted with quips about one team being better than the other. But the hosts did a great job inviting a different audience by talking about topics such as alcohol addictions, politics and wine. Ideas spew out of these two and they do very well in attracting all types of listeners.

The podcast’s target audience is primarily sports fans, which is confusing that the show advertises website builders. Even though the product discussed was easy to use, as a sports fan I was inclined to skip it. McCollum is the spokesperson in the ad and doesn’t provide much tone in his voice, sounding disinterested in the product he is advertising on. The product and the delivery do not blend together with the show.

Another issue I have noticed with the podcast is that the hosts will often make a mistake about claims that they have made. In episode 81, McCollum brought up a play where Bruno Caboclo, a Brazilian basketball player, had won a game for his country at the buzzer. But McCollum named a different player instead of Caboclo. But it was just one mistake caught out of two, hour long episodes.

As a basketball nerd and podcast listener, Pull Up with CJ McCollum earns 4.5 stars. The hosts introduce topics naturally and transition with little forcefulness. Schultz provides a strong balance, guiding the conversations and keeping guests on their toes with strong open-ended questions. While co-host McCollum offers deep knowledge about life and sports in ways that is relatable for die-hard and casual fans. McCollum and Schultz directed a wonderful interview with Pro-Bowler Bobby Wagner. I will be listening to this podcast every week hoping for more of the same. Whether you are a podcast listener or a hoops fan, I recommend you listen to Pull Up with CJ McCollum.
