The NHL Is Taking Risks. Why Won’t The Red Wings?

The Red Wings Rant free agency episode is getting a second chance after our internet destroyed the first recording — and somehow, the NHL gave us an even better conversation. Free agency opened. The Red Wings didn’t meaningfully change their trajectory. Dylan Larkin still wants out. Steve Yzerman says he’ll do what’s in the best interest of the Detroit Red Wings. But what does “best interest” actually mean? Is it what helps the team today? Is it what protects the front office from criticism? Or is it what gives the franchise the highest upside three, four or five years from now?   Friedman Reporting the following: Carolina is looking at Offer Sheet on Edvinsson Larkin value increased. Yzerman looking for replacement. Yzerman won’t extend DeBrincat. Kane not coming back. Yzerman does not want to pay young talent.   This week, we revisit the Yzerman/Larkin conversation, the Cossa and Lombardi trades, the lack of clear organizational direction, and the growing frustration around a team that keeps talking about patience while missing the playoffs every year. Then we get into the real chaos: offer sheets. Leo Carlsson signed a massive offer sheet with the Philadelphia Flyers. Pavel Mintyukov quickly signed in Anaheim. The Ducks got attacked through the restricted free agent market, and suddenly the NHL feels like it has entered a new era. So why does it feel impossible to imagine the Detroit Red Wings doing something like that? Is Steve Yzerman too loyal to relationships around the league? Are the Red Wings more interested in looking smart than taking real swings? And at what point does “responsible management” become another excuse for losing? Topics include: • Steve Yzerman’s comments on Dylan Larkin • Why keeping Larkin may not be the strong move fans think it is • The Cossa and Lombardi trades • Detroit’s risk-averse roster building • NHL free agency fallout • Leo Carlsson’s offer sheet • Pavel Mintyukov’s extension • Why RFAs may be the new trade market • Whether the Red Wings would ever take that kind of swing • The growing frustration with the Yzerplan The NHL is changing. Teams are getting aggressive. Are the Red Wings willing to change with it?   #LGRW   JOIN THE DISCORD: https://discord.gg/rd2RUDkzuS Let’s have fun! Sponsored by Draft Kings! 2. The NHL Is Going All-In... So Why Are The Red Wings Standing Still?

The NHL Is Going All-In... So Why Are The Red Wings Standing Still?

Tomorrow is the NHL Draft, and somehow the Detroit Red Wings head into it without a first-round pick while the rest of the league reshapes the NHL. Since our last episode we've seen one of the wildest trade weeks in recent memory. • Brady Tkachuk joins his brother in Florida. • Washington adds Alex Tuch and Jordan Kyrou. • Ottawa lands William Eklund. • Buffalo flips Bowen Byram into the 4th overall pick. • Calgary pays a massive price for Simon Nemec. • Colorado, Toronto and several others continue adding NHL talent. Meanwhile... The Dylan Larkin situation continues to evolve. Reports suggest his trade list may now include Utah and San Jose, opening the door to entirely new conversations. Could San Jose's No. 2 overall pick actually be available? Did Mike Grier and Steve Yzerman build enough trust through the Jake Walman trade to revisit "future considerations?" Is Florida now effectively out after landing Brady Tkachuk? Most importantly... Has Steve Yzerman once again waited too long while the market moves around him? We also dive into: • Chris Johnston's newest trade board • Max Bultman's thoughts on whether the Brady Tkachuk trade sets the floor or ceiling for Dylan Larkin • The weak unrestricted free agent market • Shayna Goldman's RFA targets • Whether Detroit should reacquire its own first-round pick to become an offer sheet player • Teams with multiple first-round selections and whether Detroit should target draft capital or NHL-ready replacements. The offseason isn't slowing down—and neither are we. JOIN THE DISCORD: https://discord.gg/rd2RUDkzuS Let’s have fun! Sponsored by Draft Kings! 3. Detroit vs Carolina. Detroit vs Vegas. And The Dylan Larkin Sweepstakes.

Detroit vs Carolina. Detroit vs Vegas. And The Dylan Larkin Sweepstakes.

For years we've asked the question: If the Detroit Red Wings were going to copy another contender, which team should it be? Back when the Hurricanes were making deep playoff runs, we argued Carolina was the blueprint. Now Rod Brind'Amour and the Hurricanes have finally won the Stanley Cup. So how close are the Red Wings to becoming Carolina? And after Vegas reached another Stanley Cup Final, how close are the Red Wings to becoming Vegas? In this episode we compare Detroit's roster, scoring depth, even-strength production, power play production, shooting percentage, and lineup construction against both Stanley Cup finalists. The results are eye-opening. We also discuss the latest Dylan Larkin trade rumors, including reports that Florida has already submitted an offer and a new breakdown from Max Bultman and Shayna Goldman on potential trade destinations. Topics include: • Why Carolina is still the better blueprint for Detroit • Why Vegas is further away than many fans realize • The importance of five-on-five scoring • Detroit's lack of middle-six production • Rod Brind'Amour's system versus roster talent • Florida, Vegas and Minnesota's pursuit of Dylan Larkin • Could Montreal become the best trade partner? • Why Utah might still be the most interesting fit • Mason McTavish and Anaheim • Carolina's potential package • What Steve Yzerman should be looking for in a trade return The Red Wings are entering a franchise-defining offseason. Before we talk about where Dylan Larkin might go, let's figure out where Detroit actually stands. JOIN THE DISCORD: https://discord.gg/rd2RUDkzuS Let’s have fun! Sponsored by Draft Kings! The Detroit Red Wings captain reportedly handed Steve Yzerman a short list of destinations he'd waive his no-trade clause for, limiting Detroit's leverage and frustrating a fanbase that supported him through ten years of losing hockey. And yet... Two things can be true. Larkin can be handling this poorly. And Steve Yzerman can still be responsible for creating the situation in the first place. In this episode of Red Wings Rant, we discuss how the relationship between the captain and the organization appears to have broken down, why fans are turning on Larkin, and whether Yzerman ever truly built a contender around the player who carried Detroit through the darkest era in franchise history. We also break down potential trade returns from Minnesota, Florida, Tampa Bay, Carolina, Dallas, and Utah while asking the biggest question facing the organization: Did Dylan Larkin quit on the Red Wings? Or did the Red Wings fail Dylan Larkin? Topics include: • Larkin's reported trade request • The short list of destinations • Why Red Wings fans are angry • The "Justin Faulk hot dog" problem • Steve Yzerman's roster construction • Potential trade packages • What happens next for Detroit • Who deserves the most blame For the first time in years, the conversation isn't about rebuilding. It's about accountability. JOIN THE DISCORD: https://discord.gg/rd2RUDkzuS Let’s have fun! Sponsored by Draft Kings! We also break down Max Bultman’s three offseason paths for Detroit and ask the biggest question facing the Yzerplan: is it time for a safe upgrade, a big swing, or a franchise-altering trade?   Topics include:   Why this could be a trade-heavy NHL offseason Whether Elias Pettersson makes sense for Detroit The risk and reward of targeting Mason McTavish Could Jordan Kyrou or Robert Thomas fit the Red Wings? Is Jason Robertson even realistic?
