Remember What's Next

History is the lens. The present is the question. The future is what's at stake. Remember What's Next brings you the conversations our people need right now. Each week, Rabbi Ken Spiro — author, researcher, and lecturer — joins Jewish educator and coach Ellie Bass to take a current issue and trace it back through Jewish history, uncovering the patterns, the precedents, and the deeper meaning hiding in plain sight. Because we've been here before. And remembering how we got here is how we figure out what comes next. Support the work: https://ko-fi.com/rememberwhatsnext

    S5 Ep20 Negotiations

Rabbi Ken Spiro and Ellie planned and recorded a podcast episode on cross-cultural negotiation differences, focusing on honor-shame vs. guilt-innocence paradigms and how these explain current US-Iran negotiations and Israel's broader negotiating history. The episode uses biblical, historical, and contemporary examples to argue that Western negotiators fundamentally misread Middle Eastern counterparts. Want the full story? Start from episode one. S5 Ep19 - Civil Unrest Part 2

Part 2: Rabbi Spiro and Ellie are discussing the riots and demonstrations by Israel's Charedim who are against conscription and the cultural history behind the animus. How do we as a people with different visions of what the center of our lives should be start to reckon with the fact that we need each other. We begin with the history of the animus between the religious world and the secular zionist movements and how it has set us up today to not even be able to talk together and what kind of country we want Israel to be now and in the future. 5. Trauma & Jewish History Part 3 - From Survival to Resilience

Trauma & Jewish History Part 3 - From Survival to Resilience

The final episode of our special series. Rabbi Ken Spiro, Professor Elan Javanfard, and Ellie Bass unpack how Ashkenazi and Sephardi/Mizrahi communities developed radically different responses to centuries of trauma — and how those responses still shape Jewish observance, identity, and reactivity today. In the wake of October 7th, those differences matter more than ever. This conversation explores why Ashkenazi Judaism became fear-based and perfectionistic while Sephardi/Mizrahi Judaism remained attachment-based and warm, what each tradition gets right, and what an integrated, resilient Jewish future could look like. Three components of Jewish resilience. Two wounds. One people. Listen now. Welcome to a special three-part series of Remember What's Next called Jewish History and Trauma. Ellie Bass and  Rabbi Ken Spiro are in conversation with Professor Elan Javanfard who is a  researcher and expert in Jewish intergenerational trauma. Together, we are going to trace the full arc: where our collective wounds come from, how they live in us today especially now and what healing might actually look like going forward. Special Series Part 2 - Jewish History and Trauma - Sephardim and Mizrachi

Part 2 of Jewish History and Trauma - In this episode Rabbi Spiro and Professor Elan Javanfard explore the chronological and psychological history and experiences of Sephardic and Mizrachi Jews and how their past has shaped and created those communities into the way we know them today. How does honour, respect and family play a huge part in these communities in both healthy and unhealthy ways, and how does a perspective on who is “outside” and “inside” create a loyalty and Jewish practice that is unique.  Welcome to a special three-part series of Remember What's Next called Jewish History and Trauma. Special Series! Jewish History and Trauma with Professor Javanfard Part 1 - Ashkenazim

Part 1: Welcome to a special three-part series of Remember What's Next called Jewish History and Trauma. This first episode in a special series examines how historical trauma shapes Jewish identity, focusing specifically on Ashkenazi Jews. The conversation establishes foundational concepts of trauma (capital T vs. lowercase t, individual vs. communal, intergenerational vs. multigenerational) and traces how 1,000 years of European persecution created distinctive psychological and behavioral patterns in Ashkenazi communities—including emotional restraint, hyper-achievement orientation, dark humor as coping mechanism, and somatization of distress.
