    A Lemonade Serenade

"They say music can alter moods and talk to you." Which sets the stage perfectly for the season finale of Scars and Lemonade. In the finale Abi and Patrick take a deep dive into the music that surrounds us and shapes us (some of it being far more recent than others!) Is it an uplifting beat, a meaningful lyric, what is it that catches your ear and puts you in a good mood when you hear a particular song? Your wonderful hosts try and explain what reaches them while sharing songs and artists that have become part of their soundtrack of resilience and songs of optimism. Thanks for supporting the first season of Scars and Lemonade and we hope you enjoy the songs that have helped shape it!

    FIERCE Action with Carolyn Colleen

    FIERCE Action with Carolyn Colleen

Content Warning: Mentions of physical and sexual abuse, suicide attempt

We’ve got a fierce episode coming at you this week! Our guest on the pod is Carolyn Colleen, the founder of the FIERCE network, a collective of resilience-building and empowerment services that help women on their life journeys. Carolyn shares her own scars and lemonade journey beginning with her challenging childhood (challenging is an understatement) in which she experienced abuse and neglect, and how it shaped her relationship with love and self-love. She shares how making changes and surviving then thriving for 5 minutes at a time and borrowing love helped her to break the cycle of abuse with her own children and go on to want to help other women by creating the FIERCE Network. She talks to Pat and Abi about the importance of making self-care a daily part of her routine, letting go of the need to do everything herself, and asking for help. They round out the episode with a 2-for-1 games sesh, playing A Slice of Hollywood and Lemonade Stand.

Underwhelmed, Overwhelmed, and Just, Like, Whelmed

Underwhelmed, Overwhelmed, and Just, Like, Whelmed

Happy Valentine’s Day…or whatever! In this Valentine’s episode, Pat and Abi profess their undying love for romantic comedies. In theory, this genre is the bond that ties this episode together, but like any good entry in the rom-com canon, it is full of obstacles trying to throw our central duo off course. In this particular set of shenanigans, it’s Abi and Pat getting pulled from movie tangent to pop culture tangent and back again while trying to make the case that the character arcs we know and love in the rom-com format are consistent with those of the stories shared by Scars and Lemonade guests. Both are full of resilience and glass-half-full optimism! So enjoy this outing full of the chaotic, screwball energy we love from all of our favourite rom-coms before they bring it all back on track for a warm and fuzzy ending dream casting their fantasy rom-coms.

Food for the Soul with Grace Pineda

Food for the Soul with Grace Pineda

This week’s Scars and Lemonade episode is coming to you from the middle of the polar vortex. Pat and Abi talk trying to stay warm and remaining optimistic when the temperature drops below -30C. (For American listeners, they tried to do the math and estimate that it’s the equivalent of -1000F. That can’t be right, can it?) This week’s guest is Grace - a chef, parent, and friend of the pod. She joins Abi and Pat to talk about her experience of growing up around family violence. She shares how that has impacted her relationships as an adult, what dating after a separation has been like for her, and how she is doing her best to not let generational trauma negatively impact her parenting. She shares with us her mental health journey of depression and anxiety, talks about therapy, and lets us know how she’s doing the continuous work of awareness, understanding, and self-compassion while learning the importance of asking for help. See if you can pick out the Lemon Seeds throughout the episode and be sure to listen until the end for this week’s game of Scars or Lemonade!

A Journey, Not a Destination with Bea

A Journey, Not a Destination with Bea

Scars and Lemonade returns this week with an episode that’s pure fire! This episode is coming at you with some big pop culture energy, so Pat and Abi challenge you to pick out all of the references. Amidst the Devon Sawa of it all (there’s your first pop culture freebie), they sit down with Bea to have a personal, engaging, candid conversation about substance abuse, body image, and recovery. Bea generously shares details about her recovery journey from the struggles of online meetings during the early days of the pandemic to finding the recovery model that works for her in order to be more aware, prepared, and compassionate as she moves through the world. She also talks to Abi and Pat about her catalyst for starting her recovery, mental health, self-care, and deciding who to share her stories with while being mindful of her audience and avoiding “trauma dumping”. Bea also lets us in on how she’ll share her experiences with her children when the time comes. And of course, they play Lemon Seeds throughout the episode and end their time with Bea by playing a new game, Lemonade Libs!
