    Pester Power and Processed Corn: Tony Chapman on the Rise and Fall of Breakfast Cereal

    The corn flake was an accident. Tony Chapman says what Kellogg's built from that accident was one of the most effective kid marketing systems ever put on a grocery store shelf. Cereal was shelved at grocery cart height on purpose. The toy inside was more exciting than the cereal itself. Tony Chapman says pester power, a kid bugging a parent until the box came home, was the engine behind the whole category. He knows because he lived it, dumping Honeycomb on the table and facing his mother's reaction when the decoder ring inside failed to decode anything meaningful. Now cereal is declining and Toy Story 5 is attempting a revival through in-box characters. Tony Chapman says the generation that would need to get excited about that is the same one that doomscrolls at the breakfast table, and the algorithm is already feeding them something more appealing.     BC gas prices have been above $2 a litre for a long time. Ryan Price says watching Ontario treat $1.75 as a crisis has been an experience. Victoria sits at $2.12 for regular gasoline, a number Ryan Price says reflects federal, provincial, and regional government taxes stacked on top of each other. When the federal government cut its excise tax, BC's other levels of government declined to follow. Ryan Price says the pain continues and the answer from those governments has stayed no. The Vancouver Whitecaps story is the bigger one out of BC this week. The team is for sale, currently sits second in the MLS, and a Las Vegas businessman has tabled a bid to purchase and relocate them to anchor a new sports complex.     The Strait of Hormuz carried 20 million barrels of oil per day before the war. Ian Wereley says that number is down 95%, and the knock-on effects are landing everywhere from hospital supply rooms to farm fields. The strait moves more than crude oil. Ian Wereley tracks the full picture: natural gas, refined petrochemicals, a significant share of the world's helium supply, plastics, and the fertilizers that keep food prices from climbing further. A company in Regina recently received a cease and desist for using helium on balloons because hospitals had priority. Ian Wereley says it is only going to get worse. He also puts 20,000 international sailors currently trapped on ships inside the Persian Gulf as a number most people have not heard, and one that is quietly pulling vessels out of global shipping lanes at a moment when the world can least afford it.     May 1st is the start of summer movie season and Steve Stebbing says the lineup is already delivering. Three Movies, One Very Strong Warning Devil Wears Prada 2 reunites Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci and Steve Stebbing says it justifies every year of the wait. The Miranda Priestly character has more depth than the original and the journalism-in-collapse storyline gives the sequel a reason to exist beyond nostalgia. Hocum is a different matter entirely. Irish director Damien McCarthy's film had audiences screaming at South by Southwest and Steve Stebbing says at least one person peed themselves at an advance screening. He is not recommending it for the easily frightened. Deep Water, with Aaron Eckhart and Ben Kingsley surviving both a plane crash and a shark attack, is the fun one. Streaming for the Weekend Man on Fire on Netflix follows Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as a PTSD-affected special forces soldier uncovering a murder conspiracy in Brazil across seven episodes. Steve Stebbing wants a second series and says audience response will decide it. Widows Bay on Apple TV Plus is a slow-burn horror comedy about a cursed New England town that Steve Stebbing names as his sleeper pick for the season.     Love bombing is not about the gifts or the attention. Dr. Laurie Betito says it is about the motive and the pattern behind them. Someone coming on fast with intense affection, constant praise, promises, and grand gestures early in a relationship can feel like exactly what you wanted. Dr. Laurie Betito says that is the point. The goal in toxic cases is to lower your defenses quickly, create dependency, and then shift to control once you are locked in. Inside existing relationships, the same behavior shows up differently: as a way to reset after conflict without resolving anything, or as a smoke screen for something the other person does not want discovered. Dr. Laurie Betito says healthy affection is consistent and respectful. Love bombing is excessive, fast-moving, and tied to insecurity or manipulation. Putting the brakes on and requiring someone to earn trust over time is the clearest response she offers for anyone who feels the pace moving faster than it should. The study is not showing a generation eager to take AI as far as it can go. Mohit Rajhans says what is coming through is ambivalence rooted in distrust. Young people watched social media companies design addictive platforms and then watched those same companies build AI. The pattern is not lost on them. Mohit Rajhans says the fix is not a ban. It is a shift toward AI as a form of media literacy, something young people need to understand at the operating system level before they enter a workforce where it is already everywhere, whether anyone calls it AI or not.     NEW - Why Your Heart Almost Never Gets Cancer: Dr. Samantha Yammine on a Stunning New Study

    Heart cancer is so rare it shows up in less than 1% of autopsies. Cancer cells pass through the heart constantly. Dr. Samantha Yammine says scientists have finally found a clue about why it almost never takes hold there. A study published in Science compared mouse hearts that could beat with hearts that could not. When both were injected with cancer cells, the non-beating hearts developed tumours readily. The beating hearts almost never did. Dr. Samantha Yammine says researchers also replicated the finding in heart cells grown in a dish: remove the calcium that makes them beat, add cancer cells, and they grow. Keep them beating, and the cancer largely fails to colonise. The why is still open. But Dr. Samantha Yammine says the next question is whether that mechanical protection can be applied elsewhere.     Vitals is a solo show running May 2 to 10 at Factory Theatre in Toronto, and Dr. Janet McMordie says the question at the centre of it is one medicine does not answer well enough. The show follows Anna, a paramedic whose life reaches a breaking point, and what happens when someone finally offers her permission to not be okay. Dr. Janet McMordie did a ride-along with Peel Regional Paramedics to prepare, and came home having felt every emotion in a single shift. She says it reminded her how vulnerable paramedics are walking into strangers' homes with no idea what they will find. Proceeds raise awareness for Frontline Families Canada, a non-profit started by first responders supporting families of fallen first responders through retreats and programming for kids.
