    Michelle Tea Loves Sluts

    Michelle Tea Loves Sluts

Michelle Tea is a slutty queer icon and the author of over twenty books. Today she joins us to celebrate the release of Sluts, an anthology she edited and it’s the first release under her new publishing organization, Dopamine Press.

We begin the conversation by diving into what it means to be a slut in our culture today, how the word has been used against us, and how we’ve come to reclaim it. Then we discuss her childhood and what pushed her to leave her hometown at 21 and move in with her then-girlfriend. After that, we discuss her sex work, addiction, the mental illness that is writing memoir, and how she got sober.

This is part 1 of our conversation, part 2 will come out on May 7— the same release day of Sluts.

Do Open Relationships Create an Illusion of Freedom?

Do Open Relationships Create an Illusion of Freedom?

It’s Valentine’s Day and I couldn’t think of anything more romantic to talk about than polyamory. Recently, it’s been having a cultural moment and in this episode, I question if open relationships create an illusion of freedom. To help answer that question I read the latest in poly “feminist” discourse, Molly Roden Winter’s novel, More: A Memoir of Open Marriage. I compare her relationship to Simone De Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Satre's and read an excerpt from The Woman Destroyed. After that, we investigate what primal panic is and how it’s  activated in non-monogamous relationships by reading Polysecure by Jessica Fern.

Polyamory, The Ruling Class’s Latest Fad by Austin Tyler Harper

    Brooke Bundy: Almost Already Famous

    Brooke Bundy: Almost Already Famous

Today on Slut— Brooke Bundy. Brooke just released her pilot, Almost Already Famous, which she wrote, directed, and starred in. The show is about Agnes, a failed actress turned stripper, and the daughter of a famous Hollywood actress. Living in her shadow, Agnes must figure out how to achieve her own fame. We discuss how she came up with the idea and her character’s fatal flaw.
Then we dive into how she started making short films and why she is so attracted to filmmaking. Brooke talks about her experience landing a role in The Hunger Games and Mockingjay to follow and how it was hard for her to rebound from that. After that role, she hosted a monthly comedy show in New York called The Witching Hour— and it was here where Brooke began examining her femininity. Not too long after, she moved to Los Angeles to start LA Kings with Tina Stormberg, a psycho slutty performance art show. We discuss how she evolved from being a tomboy to embracing hyper-femininity in her work today at Jumbos Clown Room.
To finish, Brooke reads a favourite quote from Norman Mahler on Marilyn Monroe.

YES YES YES

Unapologetic and incredibly entertaining, Kait’s intersectional feminist breakdown of what it means to be a “slut” in today’s world is so worth the listen. She is knowledgeable, nuanced, and hilarious!
