From the host that brought you The Band Played On, The Banned Teacher is a new investigation, in a different city. He says it was consensual sex. She says it was rape. He was her music teacher. She was a teen. And it wasn't just once, with one girl. He had sex with students in closets, classrooms, and cars. The Banned Teacher begins with one victim's search for justice but turns into a full investigation by host Julie Ireton. Predator
Jan 9
This predator sickens me. I can’t believe what he got away with. I applaud these strong women. It feels so hopeless at times. The patriarchy seems to rule, but we must continue to be loud and fight against such predators who target children and then blame them.
A hard, but important podcast

I am outraged that a school system & its admin, no matter what decade, could find a teacher having sex with his students perfectly employable. Every name, alive or dead, who allowed this predatory teacher to continue his reign of terror should be made public, For they are just as guilty. My heart goes out to these women and to the girls they were. May they find peace.
Thank you!

Incredible investigative reporting. Thank you Julie Ireton!
Very well produced, emotional, and bittersweet.

I throughly appreciated this podcast, the investigation, and narration shared. It’s truly bittersweet to see that the women are still facing sexism to this day due to laws made in the past, but the sisterhood formed from the victims was truly heart warming.
technical problems

Ads cut in right in the middle of interviews and when they stop the interview does not continue; parts of the podcast seem to be missing. Whoever did the ad placement screwed up and it is next to impossible to listen to this.

Just so well done !

An excellent podcast about decades of frustration dealing with outdated laws, and unresponsive police and inexplicably silent school boards!!!
Excellent & Frustrating

Such a well-done podcast. And such a frustrating process to listen to. Just listening to how Anne-Marie had to go back twice to the police, listening to the police questions where the interviewer has to correct his use of “relationship” with “dealings”, and it gets worse from there. In these days they should be better educated in the grooming process and how to discuss all of this with victims. And I’m still only in the first couple of episodes. Anne-Marie is incredibly brave and the reporter, at least, does an excellent job of providing excellent survivor-based support.
Rare, authentic & meaningful

This podcast is the real deal. All original journalism and no fluff. Goes deep — not just with the story which is shocking on its own — but also the many questions of accountability. As a listener, you go on a journey of self-discovery as it inspires you to reexamine your own assumptions, attitudes and biases. Many twists and turns along the way — some of it may be internal and feel personal because we all kind of know about that one bad teacher, bad coach or priest.
Exceptional reporting

This podcast is so well reported and produced, and so disturbing. I was involved in a community theatre production in the late 1990s, of which Doug Walker was the musical director. I was fortunate that my dealings with him were unremarkable, but I distinctly remember not liking him, knowing he was quick to anger and just not someone I wanted to be around. It makes me sick to know now how depraved he was and is. I am in awe of the bravery of all of the women featured in the podcast and I hope they feel the collective support of women and people everywhere who resoundingly denounce this man as the pedophile he is. Let go of the shame, it is not yours to carry. Thank you for your courage.
