    Canada's Freedoms and Finances

    Canada's Freedoms and Finances

Last November the Canadian Heritage Minister, The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, introduced Bill C-10 to extend similar regulations to internet media - such as Netflix, Spotify and Amazon Prime - that currently govern Canadian television and broadcast stations.

In Canada, TV and radio are regulated by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, otherwise referred to as the CRTC, and there is a minimum ‘Canadian Content’ requirement in order to maintain license to broadcast.

The Heritage Minister maintains that with the shift of media consumption to digital platforms and streaming services such regulation is important because it will ensure ‘Canadian content’ will get priority exposure when dealing with “Canadian audiences.”
Several MPs flagged the bill as problematic in the fall but it was not until Liberal Members of Parliament made changes recently at the Heritage Committee that experts started sounding an alarm. Changes made to the bill at committee would allow the CRTC to regulate the user-generated content of Canadians uploaded to social media platforms such as YouTube, Facebook and Instagram. The concern in this is that every day Canadians, or grass roots journalists, could become increasingly censored and that this would be a massive encroachment on individual free speech.

Popular social media commentators such as JJ McCullough and The Honourable Michelle Rempel Garner have begun taking to their online platforms calling on Canadians to speak out before it is too late.
My guest for this show, The Honourable Pierre Poilievre did a video that is past half a million views.

Clearly Canadians are who use these platforms concerned. The story has also not gone unnoticed by the Toronto Sun who printed cover page story with the title “Basic Dictatorship” - the most anti-internet government in Canadian history angles for full censorship powers over the web and CBC printing an article “Your free speech is at risk with Ottawa’s push to regulate online content, experts warn”.

Joining me to unpack it all, and. more, is the Honourable Pierre Poilievre. One of Canada’s most popular conservatives he represents the riding of Nepean—Carlton in the Ottawa area. He has served as the Minister for Democratic Reform, Minister of Employment and Social Development, Shadow Minister of Finance and is currently the Shadow Minister for Jobs and Industry.

    Thank you for joining us.

    Long Term Care In Canada

    Long Term Care In Canada

A recent report issued by the Canadian Institute for Health Information reported that Canada has the ‘worst COVID-19’ record for long term care facilities in the world compared with other wealthy countries.

The same study found that deaths in nursing homes represented 69% of Canada’s overall COVID-19 deaths, significantly higher than the international rate of 41%. Outbreaks occurred in 2,500 care homes resulting in the deaths of 14,000+ residents according to the report. Compounded on all of this has been the the harsh realities of the painful impact of families being kept away from loved ones in long term care facilities — in some cases where the family members kept a close eye on their elderly loved ones quality of care, ensured they were eating and getting the social engagement they needed. Because lockdowns many families have not had to the ability to say their final goodbyes in person. All of this has been nothing short of heartbreaking for us to hear, watch and in many cases personally experience.

Over the last year many Canadians have found themselves afraid of the situation for their loved ones, upset by policies and protocols separating them from their loved ones for an extended period and asking good questions about where we go from here. As a matter of fact because of the pandemic 60% of Canadians say the pandemic has changed their perspectives on whether or not they would want to be in a long term care home, or have a loved one there.

100% of those surveyed over 65 said they preferred to age in their own homes as long as possible. With an aging population and long term care expenses expected to double by 2030 now is the time for Canadians to look closely, with compassion, on what is happening and plan for the future.

One person who has thought deeply about all this is Dr. Margaret Cottle. A senior herself, Dr. Cottle is also a doctor, a long term care practitioner and an assistant professor of Palliative Care at UBC. She joins me today to discuss this very important issue so without further delay, let's get to it.

COVID Emergency Management with LCol Dave Redman

COVID Emergency Management with LCol Dave Redman

No one would deny that we have been in an extreme season of emergency response to COVID-19. What some might not know is that provinces have an arm of government ready for these exact moments. They are called Emergency Management Organizations, often referred to as EMOs.

My guest today Lieutenant Colonel David Redman has been one of the key players drafting these emergency management process plans, however, he has been speaking out over the last year because of what he describes as a perplexing oversight in which these emergency preparedness plans were not leveraged — the result: Canada has ranked last in our response to protect seniors from COVID-19 when compared to other developed nations.

Lieutenant Colonel Redman maintains that as many as 73% of the deaths in our long term care facilities - where the majority of COVID-nineteen related deaths have occurred, could have been avoided if these pre-vetted strategies had been applied. This plan also would have mitigating social disruption, adverse economic impacts and supported effective use of resources.

Lieutenant Colonel Redman joins me today to give some of his assessment and input how we need to “pivot” now to ensure we don’t make the same mistakes in the future, costing lives and leading to potentially devastating long terms impacts.

We realize this is another sensitive conversation, but an important one.

Civic Engagement & Building A Better Canada in 2021

Every week we get calls and emails from Canadians concerned about here our nation is going. This is why we are intentional do shows that give people practical tools on what they can do to be a part of the change Canada needs right now.

Doug Sharpe is truly one of Canada's best when it comes to training every day Canadians in how to have an impact on Canada through civic engagement right in their local communities.

He comes with wisdom, a spirit of faith and a track record of impact.

We had him in studio with us about a year ago and many said it was one of their favourite shows. I am excited to have him back with us again this week to encourage, inspire and bring hope at this challenging time.

Gendercide Bill Being Debated In Canada

Gendercide Bill Being Debated In Canada

Sex selective abortion is the intentional abortion of a baby girl on the primary basis of it’s gender - normally because it is a girl.

The practice is often referred to as gendercide.

After a CBC journalistic piece revealing that the practice of gendercide was indeed happening in Canada, in 2013 Mark Warawa put forward a motion, M-408, calling upon Parliament to denounce the practice. A survey at the time showed 92% of Canadians would have been in support of such a motion. In-spite of this public support, a small inter-party committee shut down the motion behind closed doors determining it un-votable. Shortly before this an international film, It’s A Girl, was also release exposing the prevalence of this practice internationally.

Almost a decade later MP Cathay Wagantall has picked up the cause to protect girls from this type of discrimination through tabling her bill C-233 - Sex Selective Abortion Act. It had it’s introduction and first reading over a year ago onFeb. 26th, 2020. After being delayed because of COVID-19 it is now expected to come up for debate in April of 2021.

Here with me this week is MP Cathay Wagantall to discuss her bill, why she felt to pick it up and her hopes for it.

    Cancel Culture

    Cancel Culture

    Cancel Culture.

It has been described as “a mechanism where a chorus of voices, amplified on social media, tries to silence a point of view that they find offensive by trying to damage or destroy the reputation or career of the person who has given offence. The goal is aggressively silence a person with whom you disagree in the hopes of casting them never again be taken seriously as a writer, editor, speaker, activist, intellectual, or in the extreme, an employee.

In Canada cancel culture has damaged the careers of media personalities such as iconic sports commentator Don Cherry, CBC journalist Wendy Mesley, Former Leader of the Official Opposition in Parliament, the Hon. Stockwell Day and the list goes on.

More recently high profile commentators such as the popular radio show host Danielle Smith from Alberta, have decided to beat cancel culture to it and cancel first by deleting their personal social media accounts & resign from mainstream media platforms.

My guest on this show, esteemed journalist Barbara Kay, herself was moving towards resigning as a columnist with the National Post because of the creeping barrage of political correctness she was observing in the profession.

In this interview we discuss the issue of cancel culture with her.
