EXTRA CREDIT: Skiing Witches, Atomic Martinis and Gruesome Crimes

This week on Extra Credit, we’re bouncing between updates, history, and stories that sound too strange to be real. We start with an update from a previous Extra Credit episode. A Michigan woman who pretended to be a registered nurse has now been sentenced to prison time. We break down the sentence and want to hear from you. Was the punishment fair, too harsh, or not nearly enough? Dina then brings a developing and particularly gruesome case out of Derby in the UK. A woman has been accused of killing her girlfriend using a horse figurine. As shocking as that sounds, it is somehow not the most unbelievable part of the story. Charlotte lightens the mood with a look at a winter tradition from Switzerland involving skiing witches. We dig into the folklore behind the celebration and the original witch whose legend inspired the tradition in the first place. Dina follows with Nuclear Tourism 101. Believe it or not, one of the more popular activities in 1950s Las Vegas was watching nuclear detonations, martini in hand. What happens in Vegas might stay in Vegas, but the atomic fallout certainly did not. Charlotte then takes us through some famous riots from history that began for reasons so bizarre they almost sound fictional. As always, we wrap things up with a Strange and Unusual Death. The Last Man Hanged in Alberta - Robert Raymond Cook

Robert Raymond Cook is remembered as the last man executed in Alberta, and one of the most controversial figures in Canadian criminal history. In 1959, Cook was arrested for the murder of his 7 family members but only convicted of one; the murder of his father, Raymond Cook, whose body was found shot inside the family home in Stettler, Alberta. The case against Cook was largely circumstantial, built on inconsistencies in his statements, forensic evidence that was later questioned, and a confession he claimed was coerced after prolonged police interrogation. Cook maintained his innocence throughout his trial and right up to his execution. Despite appeals and growing public unease about the reliability of the evidence, after less than a year on death row, he was hanged on November 30, 1960 at the Fort Saskatchewan jail. He was just 22 years old. Michael Alig A.K.A. The Party Monster

We are diving into the infamous Club Kids scene of 1990s New York and the shocking murder that brought it all crashing down. Michael Alig was once the self proclaimed king of the Club Kids, a group known for outrageous fashion, excess, and a nightlife built on spectacle and drugs. But behind the glitter and chaos was a darker reality. In 1996, Alig and his associates murdered fellow club kid and drug dealer Angel Melendez, a crime that would expose the violence, paranoia, and moral decay beneath the surface of the scene. In this episode, we trace Alig’s rise to fame, the culture that enabled his behaviour, and the events leading up to Angel Melendez’s death. We also examine how fame, addiction, and unchecked ego collided with devastating consequences, turning a party scene into a true crime nightmare. EXTRA CREDIT: Deadpool Killer Glow Downs, Laundromat Horror and Other Unhinged Stories

Today’s Extra Credit is stacked with some of the most unhinged stories we’ve covered in a while. We kick things off by talking about Wade Wilson, also known as the “Deadpool Killer”, and his dramatic change in appearance. For those who were disturbingly drawn to him for his looks, the glow down may be hard to ignore, even if the crimes never should have been. Next, we turn our attention to Ryan Wedding, a former Canadian Olympic athlete turned alleged drug kingpin. After his arrest in Mexico, Wedding is now in the United States awaiting trial. As of this episode’s release, he has entered a plea of not guilty. Dina then brings a shocking case out of Pennsylvania involving an eleven year old boy arrested for an extremely serious crime, one that could result in life-long incarceration. Charlotte follows with a deeply disturbing case from the UK. A 56 year old woman from Gloucestershire, and mother of ten, has been found guilty of modern day slavery and abuse after holding a vulnerable woman captive in her home for more than twenty years. Things somehow escalate further when Dina delivers a jaw dropping case involving a man dismembered at a laundromat. If you think that sounds like the peak of chaos, you would be very wrong. With Dina’s uranium glass collection glowing in the studio, Charlotte briefly lightens the mood with a crash course in science, offering a quick History of Radium Emanators 101. Dina then takes us to Seattle and the infamous McDonald’s known as “McStabby’s”, a location so notorious its reputation alone might make you rethink a late night Quarter Pounder run. As always, we wrap up Extra Credit with a Strange and Unusual Death. This week’s story is both bizarre and cautionary, serving as a reminder to stay well clear of flying livestock near railways. Hadden Clark - Part Two: When the Rot Is Revealed

In the final part of our series on Hadden Clark, the story moves out of the shadows and into the public eye. This episode follows Clark’s arrest and the investigation that finally brought his crimes to light. After the murder of a woman whose mother believed Hadden deserved a second chance, investigators knew they could not afford to let him walk free again. What followed was a long and frustrating investigation. Clark was deliberately uncooperative, evasive, and often openly obnoxious, doing everything he could to derail the process. But eventually, the persona known as “Kristen” emerged, and with it came cracks in Hadden's story. Little by little, the truth began to surface. Hadden Clark - Part One: The Beginning of Something Rotten

In Episode 185, we begin a new series on Hadden Clark, a man known to many as the cross-dressing cannibal. As we always do, we start at the beginning. This first chapter focuses on Clark’s parents, his family lineage, and the environment that shaped his early life. Hadden was one of four siblings, and he would not be the only one in the family to find himself on a very dark path. On the surface, his upbringing appeared stable, even respectable. But beneath that polished exterior was a household marked by dysfunction, secrecy, and deeply troubling dynamics. Clark’s story raises uncomfortable questions about nature versus nurture. Was violence always there, waiting to surface, or was it cultivated over time through trauma and instability? As we dig into his childhood and family history, it becomes clear that whatever the answer, the foundation was far from healthy. This is only the start. And it is anything but sunshine and rainbows. Extra Credit: From Citizen Arrests to Cemetery Thefts

We start with the upcoming documentary on Wade Wilson, a murderer known for his violence against women who, unbelievably, still has online fangirls. From there, we move into the recent death of Mr. Doyle, the man best known for his citizen’s arrest of serial killer Charles Ng. Charlotte then dives into the bizarre case of Jonathan Christian Gerlach, a modern day “Igor” accused of grave robbing and facing hundreds of charges connected to stolen human remains. Dina follows with a story that feels like it could only come out of Florida. Susan Avalon has allegedly shot and killed two ex-husbands, both in December, in a case that is as shocking as it is tragic. We also take a quick look at a few local cases heading to trial in early 2026, including the Calgary man accused of tunnelling into his neighbour’s home. Dina brings an Ohio case involving drugs sent to a bank in a very unconventional way, proving that criminals do not always choose the most logical route. As always, we wrap up Extra Credit with a strange and unusual death. This week’s case follows a man who defied death again and again, only to finally meet his end in a way neither he nor you would expect. Ruth Snyder: Love, Betrayal, and Old Sparky

In this week’s episode, we travel back to the 1920s, a time of speakeasies, jazz, and newspaper headlines has jaws dropping everyday. At the centre of one of New York's most sensational stories was Ruth Snyder, a suburban housewife whose plan to be rid of her husband set off a chain of events that would shock the public and change crime reporting forever. We walk through Ruth’s marriage to Albert Snyder, the sordid affair with corset salesman Henry Judd Gray, and the clumsy murder plot that spiralled into front-page scandal. And of course, we couldn't talk about this case without mentioning the infamous hidden-camera photograph that captured Ruth’s final moments in the electric chair, an image that became one of the most recognisable crime photos of the twentieth century.
