The Reel Debaters

The Reel Debaters

The Reel Debaters is a cocktail of unapologetic movie nerds and sharp minds with a pure love for cinema broadcasting from the heart of Manitoba's vibrant and ever-growing film scene. Each week, this crew of cinephiles and industry insiders sits down to explore film and television through a lens that’s equal parts irreverent and insightful, with a deep respect for storytelling and a sense of humour that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Need a mental image? Could James Bond hold down a job as a nanny? Which version of Stallone is most qualified to run a summer camp? What kind of wedding would Indiana Jones and Lara Croft have, and who’s surviving it? And seriously… could Conan the Barbarian handle a high school sex-ed class? Outside of the debates, you also get to experience the Reel Talk sessions, which descend into rich conversations around the medium and feature interviews from in their own backyard, all the way to Hollywood with Actors, producers, directors, and any voice shaping the screen today. But behind the laughs and the ludicrous hypotheticals is a genuine curiosity about how we connect to the stories we tell, the characters we create, and the impact film has on who we are. This is more than another movie podcast. It’s a cultural jam session celebrating film, and to the joy of asking "What if?" Recorded at Sick Bad Panda Studios in Winnipeg, MB

#311 "10 Things We Fan Fic About You" Best Teen Heartthrob Fan Fiction Debate

Welcome back to the circus. Episode #311 is stacked with fan fiction fantasies, Oscar-season chaos, and a classic Reel Debaters internet skirmish that absolutely did not need to happen. This episode includes: The Teen Heartthrob Fan Fiction Debate We challenged each other to pitch the best teen heartthrob fan fiction idea imaginable. Tropes were abused. Logic was abandoned. Dignity left the building early. You’re welcome. Movie Reviews Mel Brooks’ The 99 Year Old Man – Does the comedy legend still have the spark, or is this one strictly for the diehards? Predator: Badlands – New setting, same primal rules. We break down whether the franchise still knows how to hunt. The Threads Fight That Wouldn’t Die... Michael found himself deep in the trenches of Threads after arguing that Avatar being nominated for Best Costume Design actually makes sense. What followed was a spirited, slightly exhausting debate about CGI, world-building, and where costumes truly begin and end. Oscar Drama Corner... We also dig into why Wicked: For Good failed to land an Oscar nomination, with industry chatter pointing to awkward marketing, confusing campaign messaging, and reported voter fatigue. Was it politics, poor strategy, or just bad timing? Reel Debaters Trivia+ Thank you to everyone who came out for Gilmore Girls Trivia+.
