EP 184: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Illumination & The State of Video Game Movies

WAHOO!!! We’re off to the outer galaxy, not alongside the Artemis II astronauts but rather with two Italian plumbers in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and written by Matthew Fogel, it is the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie from 2023, which we previously reviewed on the podcast in Episode 034. Mario, Luigi, and their friends adventure into outer space, where they meet Princess Rosalina and face off against Bowser and his son, Bowser Jr. Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, and Keegan-Michael Key reprise their roles, with Benny Safdie, Donald Glover, Glen Powell, and Brie Larson joining the voice cast. The film is currently rotten at 43% on Rotten Tomatoes with an 89% Popcornmeter audience score. In addition to discussing the film, which has already grossed over $500 million at the global box office, we’ll talk about Illumination as an animation studio, and some of our favorite video game adaptations. The Awards Tape: A24 Awards History

With the release of A24's The Drama, we thought it would be a great time to take a moment to talk about A24 as a studio. When it comes to independent films and Oscar-winning successes, no indie film studio has exploded in popularity and name recognition to the same degree as A24, winning Best Picture twice (Moonlight and Everything Everywhere All at Once) in its 14-year existence. For some, A24 is a brand, it's an aesthetic, it's a way of life. And for others, it's an arbiter of quality, an immediate tastemaker of film culture and the beacon of emerging, exciting artists. The boutique indie studio was inspired by the idea of three industry film veterans, Daniel Katz, David Fenkel, and John Hodges, who wanted to be the home for more artistically innovative films.  After 200+ films and a vault of Oscars, we're going to talk about the studio's award successes, why they work and sometimes don't work, what they represent in the film's space, why their merchandise is so expensive, and what their future is going forward. Interview With 'Faces of Death' (2026) Director/Co-Writer, Daniel Goldhaber & Co-Writer/Producer, Isa Mazzei

Daniel Goldhaber and Isa Mazzei are longtime collaborators who have worked together across three feature films, CAM, How to Blow Up a Pipeline, and now Faces of Death. The film is a remake of the 1978 film, which spawned significant controversy for its grotesque depictions of death scenes, and the lore surrounding whether they were real deaths turned the film into a cult-followed franchise. The 2026 edition stars Barbie Ferreira, Dacre Montgomery, Josie Totah, Aaron Holliday, Jermaine Fowler, and Charli XCX. We are joined by the film's Director/Co-Writer, Daniel Goldhaber & Co-Writer/Producer, Isa Mazzei, to discuss their take on interpreting the source material in a contemporary landscape. The pair also provides a behind-the-scenes look at some of the film's most notable choices in cinematography and art direction.  Faces of Death is having its World Premiere at Beyond Fest on April 5 and will be in theaters on April 10 from IFC and Shudder.  Follow our interviewees online: Daniel Goldhaber Website, IMDb, Instagram Isa Mazzei Website, IMDb, Instagram Follow our interview host online: Danny Jarabek Support the show Subscribe for Early Access and Video: The Rolling Tape Patreon Listen Here: Spotify Apple Podcasts All Listening Platforms Have questions? The Awards Tape: 2027 Oscar Contenders Draft

The 2026 Oscars may have just wrapped up, but with our expanded weekly conversations on The Awards Tape, the award season has already turned the calendar into the next cycle. Soon enough, on April 9, we're going to get the Cannes announcement lineup, which will kickstart the first Oscar rumors, but until then we're discussing potential contenders in a draft style format to keep things fun.  Each of us is going to draft 8 potential award contenders we believe will be big value plays come next award season and the Oscars. Those selections will be graded and accumulate points throughout the year based on the following criteria: Critic and audience scores (Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, and Letterboxd)Box office receptionFestival awards, precursor nominations, and Oscar nominationsWe also instituted a couple of special rules to add to the competition: A player can only draft 3 films with a budget of $100 million or moreOne of your 8 films has to be a No Guts No Glory pick. A film you have little-to-no faith in will be an awards contender but you are willing to roll the dice. Should this film receive any (even one) Oscar nomination, it will net you an automatic 30 points for your pick.On this episode: Danny Jarabek Paul Rai Gabe Lillianthal Support the show Subscribe for Early Access and Video: The Rolling Tape Patreon Listen Here: Spotify Apple Podcasts All Listening Platforms Have questions?
