Veteran journalist Joe Nocera’s neighbor in the Hamptons was a therapist named Ike. Ike counted celebrities and Manhattan elites as his patients. He’d host star-studded parties at his eccentric vacation house. But one summer, Joe discovered that Ike was gone and everything he’d thought he’d known about his neighbor -- and the house next door -- was wrong. From Wondery, the company behind Dirty John and Dr. Death, and Bloomberg, “The Shrink Next Door” is a story about power, control and turning to the wrong person for help for three decades. Written and hosted by Joe Nocera, a columnist for Bloomberg. Binge all episodes of The Shrink Next Door exclusively and ad-free by joining Wondery+ in the Wondery App, Apple Podcasts or Spotify. This podcast is incredible. It’s true crime without a murder which is super refreshing. If you like podcasts, you will love this. I binged it and subscribed because it’s so good. I hope more of these kinds come about! 12/10 podcast. And to find out there’s a series I can go home and binge? AMAZING! Fantastic work, Joe. You did wonderful start to finish. I could honestly go on and on.

Lame

Super lame and capitalistic of Wondery to switch it from free to subscription after it got turned into a show. What a money grab. Do something selfless during this pandemic. Don’t care enough subscribe to wondery or Apple TV to learn about it. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
Exploitative journalism
2022-01-10
A wildly overrated podcast. There’s a decent story beneath the chaff that would have made a readable feature article, but a 10-part podcast is pure journalistic self-indulgence. Fattening this out to such an extent only serves to smother the real messages and make the whole saga feel excruciatingly petty. It turns genuine human drama into something resembling the worst of reality TV. Bloating this story also detracts from the sympathy one might otherwise feel for the protagonist, Marty. Ultimately each character becomes as unlikeable as the next: the self- and celebrity- obsessed, malpracticing psychiatrist; his weak-willed, obsequious, attention-seeking victim; and the greedy, arrogant journalist who gleefully continues the cycle of exploitation for his own benefit. I’m really looking forward to not watching the TV adaptation.

Kind of frustrated to have it switch to subscription only midway through.
Journalism at its best!

I found this podcast after watching the TV series and WOW! Brilliant example of the power of investigative reporting to shine a light in dark places and hold people in power to account. I can’t wait to hear Joe Nocera’s next podcast.
Thank you

For enlightening the public to this field of doctors. My Mom who lived in Kansas went to a psychologist for almost 35 years until he passed. I felt she was “hooked” like these people were by their doctor(s). It happens and it’s horrific. I have a huge distrust of this field. As a teenager my folks had me see this doctor my Mom was seeing and he was a quack. Thankfully I didn’t get sucked in as she did. I have seen other counselours whom have also left a bad taste. I distrust most in this field. I have many examples.
