This Had Oscar Buzz

I love the sheer amount of knowledge these two have regarding movies and the Oscars. Been a Gary for a few years now but I gotta say, as a non-young person, that Joe’s incessant dunking on “youth culture”/old man yells at cloud-ness is never fun to listen to and has put me off from finishing episodes because of how needlessly negative/out of touch it comes across. Chris is always able to divert the conversation back to what the podcast does best but it’s a shame that “young people” is the hill Joe’s choosing to die on. Five stars still though because they deserve it.

I’ve been a loyal THOB listener for years. The in-depth and well informed examinations of the films and their respective roll outs is undeniable. The hosts however can leave a bad taste in your mouth. Opinions are subjective and everyone is entitled to their own but I’m sad to say that often the dialogue shared on the show turns pretentious and quite nasty when discussing certain films. Film Critics have a job like the rest of us but sadly the podcast does little to erase our image of Film Critics as pretentious and bitter folks who tear down art while not lifting it up. With that said, there is a diamond in the rough here.

Joe is literally my favourite person to listen to about movies since Siskel and Ebert. Chris drives me crazy in the best most harmless way 99% of the time and it makes the listening experience 10x better. Such a fun time every episode, probably the best film podcast out there that’s more opinion instead of information based.

The ONLY podcast to reference the enormous elevator at the Scotiabank Theatre in Toronto multiple times. 5 stars!
