5 stars not because Dr Mandrola puts into words exactly what I feel.. but because he astutely and insightfully interprets the literature in an unbiased and balanced way. I hope that our younger colleagues heed his sage advice… it’s taken me 26 years of cardiology practice to journey to the same place where Dr Mandrola lives in his practice of the science of the art of Medicine. A podcast which I highly recommend to all physicians as the lessons he teaches about Cardiology can, I’m sure, be extrapolated wisely throughout Medicine.
A single criticism though… from a cardiologist who founded the largest sports cardiology program in Canada, is the founder and director of a teaching hospital cardiac rehab program (Vancouver General Hospital) , has run competitively incl. multiple sub -55 min 10 milers, sub- 75 min half-marathons etc and is an avid daily exerciser and long-time exercise advocate. I’m also a golfer.
John, you have repeatedly stated that “golf is not exercise”. I think you’re wrong and that assertion is a not in keeping with your open-minded, balanced and insightful approach to the science and art of Medicine.
How can spending over 4hrs in the fresh air with 3 friends or loved ones not be considered exercise. It fulfils all those aspects of exercise we preach as healthy.. the social interaction, sense of accomplishment etc etc, all while walking multiple miles in the fresh air.
Now, obviously that’s not all one should do from a physical activity point of view. But, one should also not only ride the equivalent of a Gran Fondo nor only run the equivalent of the Boston Marathon. One is no better than the other… they all make up the breadth of activities that are inherently healthy and are, indeed, all forms of exercise.
Congrats on a superb show that I honestly look forward to listening to every Friday, after my morning row and elliptical workout, on my way to the golf course to spend a great 4 hours with my mates:)!
